Anyone had any experience using stock manifold with J pipe vs custom exhaust manifold?
Im assuming the custom would be better, but how much?

I have and it worked a treat.Strong and reliable made from plumbers steam pipe bends. I used a T2 ( the biggest available ) with a very basic early fuel only Link computer and it was a little weapon yet totally streetable.
Using an SU as a draw through is real easy and I know that this may sound a bit rough but as I have already explained to one of the NZ Datsun guys with exactly this setup when it comes to tuning having the ability to actually drop the main jet when the choke is pulled out thus richening the carb big time will give you a very good idea of where you stand with the mixture.

ok so I bought a T25 turbo off an SR13, seems in good condition

do you guys think that the turbo with be ok for the A14 or will it be too big?

Depends on the exhaust housing compressor wheel size.
Might be a bit laggy on a14. The gt35 off Subaru forester would be good too

bugger yea a mate warned me of that but I saw so many people say use a T25 that I bought it.

anything I can do to it before I install it to reduce lag?

Best of luck if you look through my profile there's some pics of my a14 turbo build
