#11 Re: What sort of power can I achieve with $5,000?

Will do. Thanks for the advice.

I spoke to Ernie yesterday over the phone but I wasn't really too sure about goals/limits. I have directed him to this post so he can now see my ideas more clearly. Still not 100% on this idea as yet but hoping I can make it work.

The LZ Combo is still floating in the back of my mind. I just want to make sure I've done my homework properly first.

It's a hell of alot cheaper to use a Hyundai efi setup. $250 for the lot at the wreckers including comp n loom. Cost me $300 to fill and grind it out n port match it.

Hey mate,

I'm assuming you mean cheaper than factory EGI system? Can you elaborate more on donor vehicle and what's exactly required to make it work?

For a A-series I think about 90HP at the wheels would be a good goal, fairly roarty but not a total pain to drive on the street. Standard stuff, ports cleaned up on the head, camshaft, side draft carbs etc.

Keep some money aside to upgrade the brakes and suspension. I always say in these posts to get the whole package. Decent Dampers, sway bars, decent wheels and tires then add the power. I'd rather give up 10-15 horsepower on a street car for something that is more usable.

The two killers and limiting factors are gear box and rear end, you can easily spend half your budget on a diff and good gearbox. If the gearbox has huge gaps you won't make the most of the motor and if one tire spins like mad all the power in the world is useless.

As mentioned take your time get some deals and in year or two you'll have a cool car.

Well if you want original go the Agi $600 upto $1000, add the loom (more money) Yes you can grind it out with plenty of room to spare to fit oval port (more money) find a computer (more money) No I do not believe the CA20E throttle body just bolts on for bigger HP cause ive got 5 of throttle bodys here and 2 Egi set-ups and there is a bit of work involved. There are cheaper and easier ways to get 90hp out of your money.

rallytwit - Thanks for the advice mate. Much appreciated.

I do plan to upgrade the brakes, suspension, gearbox and diff as well however the $5k budget I have set is PURELY for the engine ONLY.

You will get a 4AGE in for that sort of money if you know how to swing a spanner.

Engine + box $1000
Exhaust $400
Radiator $200
Tailshaft $300
Swaybar $280
Fuel system $200
Odds ends #OOPS# arounds hoses clamps bolts etc. $1000

Thats given you can make your own engine mounts which is pretty easy and can do some basic wiring even if you cant you should still be able to do it for under 5k, i defiantly have.

Then the sky is the limit, run quads, twin webers, turbo, supercharge, massive market for aftermarket gear, tough as #OOPS# engine, tough as #OOPS# 5 speed, cheap as #OOPS# etc. etc. the list goes on.

Have already spoken to Simon and plan to go up and have a look at his toys in person in a couple of weeks.

It's looking like a boosted setup is the only way to achieve my figures...that's still streetable anyway.

Lowmion: on here has got a rare imported factory (82-84) 2L turbo sigma (not scorpian or gsr-x) 4 spd auto, full electric with Irs lsd disc diff etc in absolute mint condition until a mechanic (un-insured) did some head work and decided to wrap the fuel lined around the manifold a few times and let him drive it home. Unfortunally it didnt get far until a fire sweeped across just the top of the motor cooking all the loom, comp etc no actual motor damage or to the rest of the car.... He's had it sitting for awhile now. But the motor is fully rebuilt with prob under 500k's on it (he will still have receipts). It's 125 rear wheel kw's stock from memory with the factory turbo and this ones had a bit of work done to it.. He mentioned the other day , he wants to get rid of it cheap !!
