Nice head. You putting l18 crank rods and 240k pistons in that l16 too to get it going with that head?

I liked your turbo setup as well. Easy 100hp or more atw too.
The landbarge looks like it sorted handling wise too.

Ive got an older barge xd wagon lol. Add another 10mins to your lap time and it might be half way round track

I recall you achieved 118rwhp from one of your other L18 cars so 120rwhp for this setup is going to be great to see with lower capacity. The 120y and soarer look very impressive, full marks with your builds as always. Im not up to the S12 upgrade these are 120y hubs with custom calipers brackets?
regards, Dave

The L16 will be for under 1600cc class, so no L18 crank or pistons. Our road reg hillclimb class and the NSW Type 3 class are both based on IPRA rules which allows 2% tolerance on capacity limits, so you can go 1632cc and still be under 1600 class. L16 +.040 (1mm) pistons would make it 84 x 73.7 = 1633cc. Close enough for me :P 1cc isn't really cheating, is it? Pistons would be late L24E (EFI R30 Skyline) flat tops - if they're still available.

Yep D my old 1770cc L16/18 made 116rwbhp. L16 block, L18 crank, L16 rods, L18 pistons milled to flat tops for the right deck height and CR thanks to the longer rods. So it was just a long rod L18. This head is ALOT better than the one I had then, which was just a mildly tickled 219 SSS head. The L16 would be giving away 134cc to my old motor, but has a pretty ideal rod:stroke ratio of 1.8 so it should make better use of the big cam at high revs, and the semi counterweighted crank is lighter so it should be pretty rev-happy.

The other option is to build an L20 which would suit this head better with the larger bore. Either 86mm 1998cc for 1601-2000cc class, or an 89mm bore 2140cc which would put me up in the 2001-3000cc class, but 2100's are an iconic L series build that are cheap and easy to do, as long as the block will take it...

The brakes are early CA18DET S13 Silvia 250mm vented discs and single piston calipers with some mounting brackets from Benny. A little tickle off the 120Y hubs to allow the floating disc to slip on and locate on the centre of the hub. Just need to get some longer wheelstuds now. They should be OK. I got by with 244mm Stanza brakes on my old 1200, which were OK until they started to fade. Being vented, the S13 brakes should hold up to the 5 lap sprints.

way past time for an update - the car has been progressing, but I haven't bothered with the thread lately.

Engine is running! Fired up first go and even idled straight away. Had to put a new O-ring in the Stromberg carb, that was about it.
I was pretty sure the Bluebird donor vehicle had been underwater in floods, and it turned out the starter and alternator were shot, so had to buy new ones.
Also had to replace the Bluebird's water pump, which had an integrated fan clutch, for a normal 1600 water pump and pulley.
Got a speedo cable from the UK - parts guys here couldn't get one. Hopeless.

Hydraulic clutch done. Which is pretty damn easy on 120Ys, just drill a couple of holes. oh, and shorten the Bluebird's steel hydraulic line a bit.

Made a strut brace with a heat shield over the turbo.

Had the S13 radiator outlets modified, and mounted the radiator & 12" thermo fan.

S13 brakes are done, with braided S13 lines I had lying around from my old Sil80.

Race seat out of the Soarer is in the 120Y now too. Made up new mounts on the body to get the seat lower and a bit further back.

NCOP legal 1/2 cage has just been finished yesterday :) which is the main reason for the update. It also has removeable intrusion bars I can fit for track days. Car will be engineered as a 2 seater.

While Nev was doing the cage, I cut a sheet of alloy for rear 'firewall' over the fuel tank.

That's about it. Just a few minor things to do this weekend to get it ready to drive - bottom radiator hose, wire in thermo fan controller, modify dissy advance, fit some gauges, and some new bushes - then skids :P Can't wait to drive it!

oh yeah, picked up a set of 13x7 Hotwires a little while ago too. Always had a soft spot for fat little hotwires. They fill the gaurds out better than the 14" Enkeis, which needed spacers to fill the gaurds. But the Enkeis (minus spacers) will be good for engineering anyway.

I'm thinking I'll try Formula Ford tyres on it. They're so cheap, which is in keeping with the build philosophy of this heap, and a nice soft compound. Might be a bit soft for track days up here, but should be good for hillclimbs. Also being cross plies, I won't need to worry about chasing lots of camber like you need with radial semis.

Who did the cage for you mate? Looking at doing a half cage for mine with removable intrusion bars any chance you can put up a few more pics of it?

A mate of mine did it. He's a Coach Body Builder by trade. Does motorsport fabrication on the side. In Brisbane, but he might be able to make another as a kit for your 2dr sedan using mine as the template if you like the design. Could make the rear stays bolt in as per NCOP/CAMS specs which would make it easier to freight, or send them ready-to-weld. I'll get more pics on the weekend.

I just wanted a basic, light cage, legal for road use. I'm going to use the standard lap-sash belt so I didn't get a harness bar, but that could easily be added, as could any other bars you wanted.

car looks great, the hotwires are perfect for it!
this innocent looking y is going to embarrass many on the track
