finally got all the little bits and pieces done and got to take it for it's first drive this afternoon. Dissy isn't modified yet so keeping it off boost, but it drives nice and smooth and feels pretty lively even off boost.

I was planning on using this, pretty sure it will fit onto the Bob dizzy without too much fuss.

890kg on the same scales yesterday. Changes since the last weigh-in are the L20, 63a 5spd, BW68 diff, turbo setup, 2.5" exhaust, big S13 radiator, 12" thermofan, half cage, seat mounts, a couple of gauges, S13 brakes, strut brace, and bigger Maddat sway bar. All adds up to 100kg. Not too bad at all. My old L18 1200 coupe weighed 850kg And the CA18 turbo 1200 coupe weighed 950kg These are all with about 1/2 a tank of fuel Took it for a decent drive yesterday to a mate's place about 120km away in the hills behind the sunshine coast. Bad news is the turbo seal is gone! Seriously smokey after long downhill runs where you're off the throttle, so the turbo's under high vacuum in a drawthru setup, and there's lots of oil in the inlet. :( Doesn't noticeably smoke on cruise and light acceleration. Otherwise it was great - surprisingly economical, driveability is awesome - smooth and responsive, and it ran nice and cool. No dramas whatsoever. Pretty happy with the handling too.

Looks and sounds like a brilliant combination of motor and vehicle. I'm looking forward to installing an L-Series.
Did you install a carbon seal on the turbo? Or was it blowing excessive smoke because the seals have failed.

the draw-thru setup is pretty old and was a professional setup for L28 before we hacked it up. I'd be very surprised if it didn't have the right seals in it. It was last used by a mate about 4yrs ago on his 240Z for a few months before he went back to his worked NA motor. It didn't smoke then. I think the seal has just died of old age.

Talk to levey about flogged out seals on his ring.
my 1200 sedan was 900kg on the dot with full tank of lpg. l16 63a dogleg larger tunnel bw 68 diff coil overs etc. so 850kg is great

The turbo is in the shop getting rebuilt now. It had the right carbon seals just everything was completely worn out - it even needs a new core! Really could have used a new comp wheel and exhaust housing as well but I'm cutting corners a little because it's a budget build. Should have it back next week :)
So that was crunch time for the decision to stick with the turbo or build an NA motor. It would have been similar money to buy a pair of carbs, but the turbo setup ran so nicely and our local track has noise limits that will be easier to meet with the turbo... plus I kinda like old school carby turbo setups and let's face it, it should easily make more power than a NA build. Probably blow a heap of things up as well, but that's all part of the fun! I also picked up some secondhand 205/60 semis thanks to Matty, so it should be all systems go for it's first track day by the end of the month! :)

reconditioned turbo is back, but I've decided to freshen up the engine while its apart. Welsch plugs were just starting to leak and there was a rattle in the timing chain area. I pulled it out and stripped the engine on the weekend - turns out the tensioner and one of the guides were worn through to metal. Oil rings are all gummed up and the bearings have seen better days, so it's just as well I pulled the engine now I think...
It will just be a standard rebuild. L20 CR worked out to be about 8.5:1 Perfect for a turbo :) I'll get the flywheel lightened a bit and get a Sports 2000 clutch to give it a bit more clamping pressure while still being smooth & gentle on the 63A box. Might paint the engine bay while its out too. You can view topic.
