I agree with Townie, Check that there wasnt a water hose conected to the engine breather. It's the steel pipe that comes out on L/H side (manifold side) of the block towards the rear.

yep.... stupid, stupid, stupid!
Problem solved!!!!
hooked up the rear hoses wrong.
It appears that one of the rear hoses that go into the block is a breather not a coolant hose.

Good to see a result, I wonder if the motor will be ok, got alot of cleaning to do!.

I did this myself with my first Datsun 1200 and cleaned it up and it worked fine just ALOT OF CLEANING and drying... but never had an issue once it was cleaned
