If a car is sold with a rwc and reg for over $3k or $5k (cant remember) in all states has a 3 months warranty. And depending on contract 1-2 week cooling off period for refund. Other option"s fair traders or even have a go at rwc bloke and say its a boggie and threaten his license. Dont let em push you around , just ask for money back immediately or repair it.. And also applies to private sales but not auctions, claim must be given in writing and he has a week (5 working days). Yards are usually insured so dont think its will be a hassle. more than likely theyll do a exchange motor

Sorry, but that's a complete load of nonsense.

In QLD used cars only get the statutory 3mth/5000km warranty if they are under 10yrs old and under 160,000km. Otherwise they get a 1mth/1000km warranty. That will vary from state to state. Statutory warranties do not apply to private sales!

Most states have no cooling off period. In QLD where there is a cooling off period (for secondhand cars only, not new), it applies for 1 business day after the contract is signed, and only then if you do not take delivery of the car in that time. Once you take delivery the cooling off period is over.

And there is no point having a go at the RWC bloke. Checking the condition of the engine is not part of a roadworthy. It just can't have excessive oil leaks or blow excessive smoke. And I doubt he would have bought it if it was blowing smoke at the time. So don't bother "threatening his licence", that will only make you look stupid and get everyone off-side.

What you do is take the car back to the dealer and give written notice of the defect to the warrantor. That will most likely be on a claim form the dealer will provide. The warrantor must respond within 5 days. Once the warrantor accepts that the defects are covered by statutory warranty, they have 14 days to complete the repairs. It doesn't cover you if your mis-use or negligence cause the problem - ie over-rev, low oil, 91 octane fuel caused detonation resulting in cracked piston etc etc

So this is the news...

I have spoken to the dealer. He has offered a verbal 12 month extended warranty on the vehicle at no charge commencing when the vehicle is returned to me. This I will be chasing as a written warranty. So after speaking to the dealer he basically told me its my car now and I asked if he would trade the vehicle back in. He didn't say yes or no but believed I would satisfied with the car when it comes back. That was the end of my conversation with the dealer.

Conversation with the mechanics that are undertaking the repairs to the vehicle have informed me of the process they are going to undertake. The block itself is in satisfactory condition. One piston had smashed ring lands and cracked piston rings. The piston has not damaged the bore at all.

The process now is that the vehicle will be getting a full set of new forged pistons "Mahle", piston rings and a full genuine gasket kit through out. ARP head studs and Felpro head gaskets. Heads will be pressure tested and block will have a fresh hone.

The mechanic undertaking the repairs said its in his best interest to put this car back on the road in better condition than it came out of the factory because he will have his name against it. I sent my brother in yesterday to inspect the vehicle and the damaged to the engine and I will be heading in on Thursday to have a look also.

So I am making some progress. :)

I had a Suzuki swift gti many yrs ago,i use to give it a hard time and finialy the gearbox gave way with first gear absolutely ruined.I got it fixed and changed my driving style and about a week after it was fixed I was travelling on the highway in fifth gear and all off a sudden it gave away again. The dealership use aftermarket circlips(I think that's what they are called)on the actual gears to hold them I place.Anyway they wanted me to pay the full price again saying that I was thrashing it again,if I was why did it take 4yrs off thrashing the first time.So I got onto my aunty who at the time was working for the NSW premier as his personal assistant and had abit off pull in the department off fair trading,so was fixed in 2 days without having to pay a cent the second time.

That's good bailz. Sounds like they are doing the right thing by you. Particularly with forged pistons - better than factory spec.

The underlying cause of the broken ring lands is the only concern. They aren't a real weakness in a STi and don't fail under normal conditions. Is it pinging? Make sure the missus only puts 98 in it? Is it running standard boost? Might be a good idea to ask the mechanic while you are there what he thinks might have caused it.

it has a cobb cold air intake... its possible that it was never tuned after the Install...

apparently Subaru had a recall of the 2008+ sti's because a few 1000 had smashed ring lands within the first year. The Subaru recall was to reflash the ecu tune. The ecu reflash was done on my sti because I checked with local Subaru dealer he checked the vin.
The factory tune I have been told is not the best and it leans right out between 6-7.5k. Hence the Subaru recall
