I thought I would post about my 120y wagon,
We have owned this little car for 2.5 odd years and found over the last 12 months we haven't used it as much as we should,so the decision was made to sell it....Many months later after being low balled with prices, asking for payment plans,no shows, I thought F...it were keeping it.....So what was i going to do with it.. well Nothing its been a fun car lets just use it the way it is..I mean im in the middle of 351 turbo F100 build....I decided to tidy the shed, there was crap everywhere, then i found some steam pipe and bends,a turbo, fittings as such so a simple J pipe was welded a vw 1600 solex carb and other bits and bobs....
so in 11 days we have gone from std motor Na to running 98 and 15 pounds to E85 and 11 pounds on what was a stock motor, fuel sytem, and points and still is,

I recognise the first pic from the recent ad. Looked like a very nice car and a good buy. If it wasn't so far away I probably would have bought it. Quick work getting the turbo on there :) Looking good

I must admit, with the turbo how much different it is to drive ,Im really enjoying...but I now feel i have reached the limit for a stock system
E85 has made a huge difference but also has strained the simple set up and has highlighted many weakness, also another thing was E85 is so bloody forgiving even when i haven't heard any detontion but reading the plugs says otherwise Im doing my last Modifiation on the carb and if this doesnt make a difference then i will drop the boost...Im going to keep pushing the envelope with this little car just wish I did this years ago!
Cheers anthony

RE pinging - have you done any dissy mods? reduce the amount of mechanical advance or lock the dissy. You need to do something about the amount of timing you're running when you go forced induction.

cheers mate yes the dizzy has been locked,
The problem isn't timing it's happy locked at 25 deg regardless of the boost pressure, the issue is Fuel distribution..
Watching the O2 gauge it showing 10.9-11.3 underboost But the reading is the average of all 4 pots 1&4 are running richer and 2&3 are leaner when reading the plugs it's showing slight detonation/lean with 2&3 so i have enlargerd the main jet and progression jet but this is about the limit and this time i have solderd the emulsion tube completely to avoid leaning off.....
I have gone as far as it can with the current set up....
The more boost i run,im having to close the gap because the secondary field doesnt have enough balls to fire a good spark.
The stock fuel pump is at its limit of flow thats needed with E85 and supporting the boost im running(not 98),Im up to around 53% increase in jet size over the 98 set up!
I know what needs doing so theres no point hurting the motor chasing extra power,i will drop the boost down be happy with what i have achived for the minute..
cheers anthony

I could be wrong but TopGear had no issues with 10 degree locked dizzy, high octane and had no issues upping the boost. What I understood is that under boost e85 burns faster while slower on NA so could it be that e85 has less chance of pinging due to flame being very quick but not inconsistent as with petrol?

Here are some interesting threads on smaller engines seeming to do better than larger engines by going low timing numbers and higher boost.

when i ran 98 it was locked at 15 deg was running as high as 15 psi no issues, detonation wasnt evident doesnt mean it wasnt happening..?
it was running well,I changed to E85 because im not running any intercooler and its octane is 108 when you say topgear was running high octane fuel "what" 98 ?
Running on E85 requires more timing as the fuel is more dense as more is need compared to 98,also a blow through carb produces larger dropplets compared to efi The bigger the size of the fuel dropplets the harder to light off, So more fuel is need more timing is also needed to burn the extra fuel thats why you have to advance the timing,
I need to explain the detonation isnt audible...Its not on 4 cylinders just two,and i know its happening BY reading my plugs..cylinders 2 and 3 are running lean, there is speckling on the plug not on 1-4 my mixtures are good under boost,,but you could have two rich cylinder and two lean the oxygen sensor reads over all...So im now tunnig the car by pulling the plugs as they are telling me what each cylinder is doing.....
Those articles make perfect sense but there talking 28-40psi and you would need to pull back on the ignition,Im running 25deg 11psi...try running under 23 deg and it pops and miss fires down low ,add 2deg into it and the becomes a different character....run it at 18 deg on idle and she will reach 3/4 on the gauge to much wall exposed to the flame front,at 25 deg i can run around the block a little above cold and pop the bonnet and have the carby dripping with condensation because it so cold it great stuff
im down frankston way
cheers anthony
