well its not a fuel problem because i have a good flow of petrol
my system pretty much floods itself of how much i try to crank it to start..

its oviously a electrical problem but seeming datsuns have such a simple setup i dont understand why it could be so hard to find the problem

Obvious? Can you see a plugged jet? A good flow of fuel won't help.

The reason it is difficult is because it could be a fuel, spark or air problem. Some are more likely, some are obscure. If you disregard the more common, easily tested causes, it could be long time before you figure it out.

run a wire straight from the + on the battery to the + on the coil see if it starts, if it does you now know where to start looking...If it does start you will need to remove the wire off the + side of the battery to stop...all this does is bypass the loom for faults if it doesnt then the coil could be at fault.
cheers

i tested my first spark lead while turning the starter over and the spark was very yellow and faint

What makes you think it is an electrical problem?

Sounds electrical to me

Try replacing your condensor(capacitor) (the small cylinder in or attached to your distributor) no need to replace the points at the same time at this point.

I have had lots of issues with condensors, they seem to 'dry out' over time and new ones are made in china in small factories that are not good quality, i went through 4 of them within 2000 miles before eventually installing a points replacement kit. The tech wiki says this is the best mod you can do to your Datsun, and i have to agree...

well i just changed points and condenser and it started running but sounds very out of tune even backfired acouple times
going to adjust dwell, gap and timing tomorow see how it goes hopefully she goes alright
plus add on the new carburettor and fuel pump i recently purchased.

Hey patdaty, when Eva u do points and condenser u need to reset ur timing, that will be why it was backfiring ect... I found that out day b4 yesterday the hard way :)

it seems to be running alright now, also changed the rotor botton and cap, new carburettor is on so timing is next
it backfired today in my workshop sounded like a bomb went off
also checked the sparkplugs they looked burnt out like the car was running to rich

Let us know how you go.

If the carb you replaced was working fine before the spark issues started, use it to get timing right, then throw ya new carb on.

The new one may be well out of tune, which would make timing difficult.
