Dual carb heat shield question

Doing some test driving. A15 into MG Midget, H89 head port matched to GX intake.

I am using a pair of SU HIF4 carbs on the GX intake with a sectioned MGB heat shield. I am not a very good welder and the heat shield was warped a little. I did what I could but now that it's all hooked up and running I have a vacuum leak between the spacers and the shield.

I am using the 210 exhaust manifold with it's factory heat shield. Could I get away with running the carbs without the carb heat shield? Just take it off, rig up mounts for the cables and go. It would be intake, phenolic spacers and carbs only. Will the exhaust manifold heat shield be enough or am I out of my flipping mind?

The heat shield is not needed.

Risks are overheating, vapor lock, and varying a/f mixture.
