I used to use a wooden clothes peg.

doesn't look attractive, but a cheapo alternative.

If your cable isn't too chewed up at the engine end, you could pull out the cable and run some plumbers gas tape the length of the inner cable and put it back in carefully.

I think the peg idea will work best though.
