Dude the taxi thing was a joke! dah!
And prices still vary!
the idea of fitting a later model alternator was that it has a higher amperage! as old cars only had carbies
And wiring hasn't changed on alternators much it is just plugs

Well I was driving back from work today and my car just stopped a suburb away from my parents house, where I was going, no lights, no radio no click when I turn the key, no nothing. I check everything I can and I got nothing.
So's I call the NRMA (AA you guys call them) and the dude comes and checks it all out and I have blown the fusible link (I think thats it). So I need to get the short fixed properly and I need to get the new link and I thought why not lets get the damn alternator wired in at the same time. So tomorrow morning I am going to trot down to the auto electricians and see if they can get it all done.
Hopefully they can.
Oh and see the difference in size between the two *HERE*

I was just looking at your photo, when I noticed that your alternator is mounted on the right side of the block, where as mine is mounted on the left down below the radiator hose. Was this something datsun changed during the production run? I know that the early A12's (dizzy near the front) had the alt on the left.
The alt in my car was probly moved to this side because it would hit the battery mounted the way yours is. The reason I ask is that one (both?) of my spare engines is like this and I fairly sure that is was like this from the factory.
I other thing, the A12 in my car was a replacement engine from japan and was originaly fitted in a 1200, the other two are 120y engines.

I'm not usre what you mean by left or right.
My alternator is on the drivers side now (Australia) but when I ahd the standard A12 engine that came with the car it was on the lower passenger side. THis is what the newer models had in my experience. 120Y A12's, A14's and A15...

Oh yeah I just dropped it off then and the sparky seemed too confused to fit the alternator so I jsut told him to fix the link and get rid of the short.
I'll have to mount the alternator for him and then get ti wired up. Or wire it up myself...
Jsut don't trust myself...

Hey Lobster if you have trouble wiring it from the way I described let me know and I will draw a diagram for you to follow!
You will just need to get the right wire and plugs that way!

Your Pic of the alternator is the one I described as an RE60 regulator!

The terms Left and right are from the perspective of someone sitting in the car ... facing forward of course! So "left" is the same in the US and Australia where as "drivers side" varies ...

My theory is that datsuns with the A10 and early A12 have the alt on the left, and cars with the later A12, A12A, A14, and A15 have the alt on the right.

My B10 has the later A12 with the alt on the left like on the original A10. If the alt was on the right like it would have been on the A12 it wouldn't clear the battery in the B10 engine bay.

But, what made me ask is that one of my spare A12's had the alt on the left instead of on the right like it should be. This is how it came out of the car (a 120y), which made my wounder if 120y's were different in this regaurd.

well my dad had to check his car cus the batery light came on but all it was was a fuse but any way wen his freind got the volt meter wen everything was right he first checked the batery with car going and it stayed the same for like about 20 sec then the amps went up
