Are available in AUS, that's what the link was for. For example https://www.lencrowforklifts.com.au/spare-part/h20/4

Thanks for the info. Have touched base with a few and they have no idea where the units have come from or who made them. General consensus is "we buy them from a wholesaler and we know they are imported but they won't tell us where from". Apparently Hitachi Remanufactured means the housing is original but all new insides. Doesn't give me much confidence

Why not stick with the external reg? I had what I thought was a 120y alternator with internal reg in my sedan but when that died I went back to standard.

The later solid state external regs are a good thing. Fuse protected and voltage adjustable plus your 1200 is already wired for it

Fair call I guess.

Are there any decent Japanese made quality replacements to suit available in Oz?

Yes. But they are remanufactured.

If you need brand new, Australian forklift supply
companies sell 23100-B9802 for over $1000.

Still trying to source an Alternator. I have determined that I need something at Least 65amps.

I understand that the LR-160 versions might fit?

I have found this on ebay which is a 70amp version. It has an LR-160 cross reference and is a Bosch Unit.

Will this work?

Anything will work. GM alternators are very popular, but Ford makes 70A models too.

There is no 65+ amp unit that bolts straight up with no mods needed. That Bosch model will need wiring modifications and a different size fan belt at the very least. It may also need mount mods. It can be made to fit an A12.

Which 70amp alternator is easiest to mod to an A12?
