I read somewhere that there was asbestos in the sound deadener used in various 60's and 70's model cars. Any idea if our japenese friends used it or if it may be in the australian assembled cars?
Thanks Trav

There was asbestos in everything in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Yes, Nissan used asbestos in floor insulation.
The good news is it is in an asphalt base. It does not appear to me to flake or grate, but stays embedded even if chipping it off. So likely there is no risk of inhaling asbestos fibres unless you use a grinder on the insulation.
To be safe, leave it alone. If it needs to be removed for some reason lift it off the floor while wearing a mask. Do not saw or grind it. It comes off in large pieces with relatively little work.

Thanks Trav

I wonder if that is dealer applied? My sedans had it but not my ute. I doubt if it has any asbestos. Just some kind of "undercoating".

Yeah my sedans got it. I just read somewhere on another car forum that certain cars did have asbestos in it but it wasnt really supported with any evidence, just a rumour. I reckon they might have got mixed up with brake fibres from the old asbestos pads that might have created a residue under the wheel arch. Thought i would ask the question though. Its a pain in the ass to get off i know that much.

I wish I had read this before the weekend. I used a flap wheel since the floor insulation was being stubborn for removal. Had the stuff flying everywhere

I read on the interweb somewhere that freezing the floor insulation causes it to.lift off easily. For example using dry ice. You can search for it if interested.

There are different types of asbestos it just depends what type it is to how bad it is to u, but u would have to send a sample away to get it checked properly. I have had to be put on a register from my old work coz they bought cheap lagging from ova seas somewhere that didn't regulate it!!! Cheap bastards!!!

And even the loose asbestos probably wont give you cancer. But the more you breathe of it, your chances get worse.
