How do people pass engineering on l series or even a15 non turbo conversions then as they are carby? Or does a turbo setup make emissions worse through carby? Sorry i dont know much about turbo's. Never had one. Also my understanding is you only need to pass the emissions controls for the relevant year i.e. 1974?

Turbo is less emissions if done right, such as that done by a team of engineers at GM. However, the engine timing and carburetor circuits needs very careful tuning to work correctly with a turbo. If that is done it should pass. Wasn't this car supposed to have been certified in another state already?

The emissions standards in most places are either the year of the car, or the year of the engine. So putting an A15 in may need to pass the 1979/1980 emission standards. For replacement engine (A12) the year does not matter, so putting a 1981 A12 in a 1971 1200 doesn't need to pass any special regulations.

NSW specifically regarding SAFETY
Quote:
Significant modifications requiring certification

* Fitting of turbochargers or superchargers not originally offered by the engine or vehicle manufacturer, or increasing the original power output by more than 20%.
NCOP makes a difference between turbos that make up to 20% more than a stock engine, and turbo installations that add more than 20%. It looks like the latter will need to meet a raft of regulations including newer ADRs that don't usually apply to 1971-1973 vehicle.

Talk to an engineer.

Thanks again dave. If you ever get to oz let me know and ill shout you a beer or two. I dont think i would be the only one.

I called a couple of engineers today but they were both really vague. All they said was cant really tell you anything without seeing the car. Buggers know how to charge just for consultation too. Oh well guess ill just bite the bullet and get one out to look at it. Just hope its worth it and i only have to have the leaky diff fixed/replaced and motor tuned to pass emissions. Fingers crossed.

Thanks

So here are some pics. Any opinions or info from what you can see of the engine build are welcome.

Thanks

should be fine to engineer . Will need to have pcv hooked up ,maybe bigger front brakes stanza or 200b and make sure the exhaust is under 98db and if ithas a bov it will have to be a plumb back call auto sport engineering at kirawee and see what they have to say.

great looking coupe!, hope there isnt too much bog under her as shes had plenty of paint on her.

Hope you can engineer her, looks like a fair bit of love went there

original whitewalls? if so give them a scrub looks really sleeper!

Yeah shes pretty straight. Tiny bit of rust bubbling up on boot. Otherwise cant find any. Paint has definately had a few touch ups though. Havent been over her with magnet yet. Engine bay and floor pan are clean as a whistle so should be an easy respray down the track. Unfortunately white walls are a grind job so they will be going. Shame too as tread is 90% on all 4.

Saw that one advertised. Looked like a good buy.

NCOP requires turbo cars to meet modern emissions tests, not just those of the year of manufacture. It will not be all but impossible to meet them with a carby. With my L20 turbo, I refitted the standard carb for engineering. Of course, some people find dodgy engineers...

Ok. Ive been doing A LOT of reading and cant find anything about having to comply with modern emission standards. Only thing i can find about that is for vehicles that fall under the category of icv (individually constructed vehicles). As far as i have read vehicles that fall under LA3 for turbo and superchargers just need to apply to the applicable second edition ADRs relevant to the year of manufacture for the motor if they are pre 1988. Will be trying a few more engineers tomorrow and will keep everyone updated.
