H165 doesn't have a diff cover. It uses a banjo type housing.

All relative I guess. I would say those are rare vehicles to find parts for. I think it is a great idea to make a new carrier, especially if you made them to suit a more readily available lsd like the Toyota ae86.
I have never seen an alloy h165 before. I did receive an unsolicited pm from a member on the this site trying to sell me one, but it was an "offers" type thing and apart from saying it was from a late model commercial vehicle wouldn't elaborate any further. So much for sharing the knowledge aye.
Anyway very cool to be making these parts it's just a shame the market for them is relatively small making it hard to make it viable 😟

TRD LSD will fit in either stock H165 gear carrier. See TRD LSD Swap. It's a lot less expensive than the NLA Nissan LSD, and it was sold new just two years ago. Now the TRD version is also No Longer Available, but still easier to find than the Nissan version.

I didn't realise the trd unit was nla. That's a shame.
My understanding was that to fit the ae86 lsd to the h165 carrier you had to turn the bearing diameters down and that it's not ideal because it leave the bearing diameters quite thin and more likely to break?

What sort of difference could you expect from having an alloy H165 carrier as opposed to standard cast? I'd be interested in one.

Main differences:

* Alloy 5.5 lb, Iron: 14.5 lb. So you save 9 lb unsprung weight for smoother riding. Hauling 9 less pounds for the next 100,000 km.

* Alloy carrier has a slightly lower torque rating. The carrier flexes more under huge power transfer. May be marginal for a 2.0 liter engine, but can handle a turbo A15 or a supercharged A14. The alloy carrier was used with 1.6 liter engines. Iron H165 was used with some 1.8 liter engines. Nissan fitted the H190 with 2.0 liter engines.

* Looks schmick, especially when polished and clearcoated.

Ive been doing some work on fitting the TRD LSD 6.7" centre into the H165 housing and it aint simple.
Im not keen on machining down the LSD centre for the H165 bearings for the case of thinner bearing journals.
The other option is to machine the housing to take the TRD LSD bearings. Bit of a job but doable.
The TRD centre has a wider overall side-to-side measurement, so it may need machining regardless of bearing choice to fit into the H165 housing.

Yeah, 6.7" GTS diff is too big. Pitroad uses the AE86 6.38 LSD.
