You may have to drill out the bolts. Many of these bolts are designed to break off at the end when they are installed

Exactly right. So after removing the column trim cover, there will be some bolts holding the lock to the column:

To remove the headless bolts requires tapping the bolts out slowly, or using a hacksaw to cut grooves in the lock. You can loosen by using a punch/drift/flat-screwdriver, slowly hammering the screws anti-clockwise. It takes a very long time, so be patient, but they will come out

So you can buy the Steering Lock

Or just the Lock Cylinder barrel

Lock Cylinders are only $10 at Rockauto.com and come with instructions. You can get your door locks re-keyed to match the new ignition key or just use two different keys

Another option is to keep your original ignition lock, buy a new key and have a locksmith "code cut" the key to match. It'll work like new as the keys are designed to wear instead of the lock. The 4-digit code is on the right side door lock and sometime written on the inside of the glove box.

To remove the Lock Cylinder is kind of tricky. I haven't done one in many years it was something like put the old key in and then turn to the ACC position then stick a paper clip in the hole and jiggle it until the barrel comes out

Yes, B310 used a single key for all locks. So the key code is for them all.

I almost forgot -- some guys buy a new lock, but then throw away the new keys and have the new lock re-pinned to match the old key. Many options, too many !

Glad to have found this - I'm about to embark on the same thing for the same car - '79 210 (b310)... must have been something up with that year? wish me luck.
