If you're looking for more adjustability such as base height, dampening, camber, castor look into the S13 strut swap. I've done it on my 1200 ute and it was piss easy. No permanent mods are required to the car or S13 parts. I haven't driven on them yet though and droop may be a concern (the S13 coilovers don't give much). I still need to spend some time fine tuning mine but the base setup is easy.

I also did a youtube vid on it for my build thread https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4szDZIJK8fc

Elrich11 I remember reading about your setup a while ago, looks fantastic. It wouldn't be too hard to attach the sleeve to a standard strut tube too as I'm sure I've seen done to a 510 in the U.S.
The only thing with the S13 gear is a lot of it is set up for drifting ie: rock hard (lots of poor quality Chinese dampers too) - so if the shock component is not high quality and readily re-buildable/re-valvable, it might not be the best way to go for a rally setup(?).
I do know that the Victorian 2WD rally class winner still runs S12 struts (built by MCA) in his S12 and not S13 struts as its believed the close to zero scrub radius works better with rally tyres on gravel. Interesting little point, though I think S13 setup would be better suited for tarmac track use if only just for brake options

^ I'd be very keen to know how the 4kg springs go in place of the 8kg springs and I wonder how the shock setting changes go too. Glad you're the guinea pig! Good stuff, hope it works out well.

Haha, yeah I will be a bit of a guinea pig and to be honest my setup is for a very different purpose and probably will never be used to a level that requires the adjustment I have. It will be interesting how the shocks act with the lighter springs, it might end up a dogs breakfast but worst case I will revert back to stock and that's why I've tried to keep the car standard in case I get to that point.
There are a lot of Chinese "disposable" coil overs on the market for the drift guys which is basically what I have used but there are some serious options for the S13 although you will pay a premium for these.
I'll be interested to see what solution you come up with so keep us posted!

Robby it might be worth asking the blokes on BMSC forum about S13 setups for gravel rally, most likely Murray Coote setups or DMS etc. I've seen a few people with S13s at events I scrutineer at like Curley and Dunkerton for example.

Gee this has grown. You seem to be across most suspension setup stuff and willing to revalve etc. Sounds like you just need to go with what you know.

Which is your local track? Originally you said you wanted to autocross, rallysprint and tarmac. What motor are you running? If your still in A or B class i wouldnt bother throwing too much cash. Theres not much serious competition. keep it cheap and its way more fun

I have an L20b to put into the 120Y, and i have access to a few wrecked Stanza's for bits such as engine mount crossmember horns etc.
IIRC car will be in Class B as its over 1600cc. My local track is Bagshot located in central Victoria, it suits lighter cars. I currently run my LS1 Commo there just for kicks, but it's like taking a bazuka to a gun fight. As the car is only a club car I am not really looking to spend MCA type money on shocks, I have a chassis projects more suited to that investment, and at this stage I will most likely use KYB or imported Bilstein. Issue has been most info out there on the other forums are for 510/A10 weight vehicles, though mine with an L20b probably would be back in the ball park! I've spent many years working in the motorsport industry (fabricator), but most of it has been with asphalt open wheel type stuff so I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to dirt. Dirt is rather addictive too! I'm studing in a different field at the minute and I weld off-road 2wd extreme buggies for pocket money, so progress isn't fast when it comes time to buy stuff!
Might nearly be time to call a few vendors for their recommendations.

Your sugestion of the Commodore Billie is probly best though. Gotta love that billie bounce as they say, plus you can take it across to another car if need be

Stew Wilkins sells the Commodore Bilsteins re-valved to suit Datsun rally cars - though they are around $850 (front pair). Standard Commo Bilsteins are around $600. Then there is the strut tube mods etc so quite a bit of money and work. I think he also re-valves the Commo wagon rear shocks to suit also, though would have to check. Rears around $400 standard, $650 re-valved. BTW: Commodore Bilsteins have a comparatively large piston size for better heat soak.
The KYB combo is around $500 total, Z31 front, mono tube rear, rather palletable price. As always, the danger is building the worlds cheapest 120Y into the most expensive! (Car cost $38, it was actually $40 but I found $2 in the car).
Also got some disappointing news - my 40mm Dellorto's I bought very very cheap from an old Alfa enthusiast work mate are DHLA40"G" marked - G as in emission carb and a right royal pain to do anything with... They might be up for sale soon. Good for a Sud and that's about it.

Quoted $2150 for MCA Blue series suspension (as to suit a 510, non coil over rear), including adapting to strut stubs. $300 less for DIY stut mods.
