Looks like i also added to the confusion hehe,,,I just edited my previous post. The mid close and ultra close 56 4 speeds were F4W56L not F4W56A.
56a 4 speeds were revised to be "abit stronger".
Which kind of explains the reputation of the 56L 4speed close ratio gearboxes...
So there was no 56A 4 speed close ratio gearboxes from datsun competition??

quote from tech wiki

F4W56A is the 1973-1/2-revised version of the F4W56L that was mounted on the B110 series. Modifications have been made on the following points to strengthen the gears and bearings, and to improve lubrication performance as well as noise and vibration proof at high-speed driving.

Strengthened gears and bearings: Although there is no change in the gear ratio, each gear has an increased width by 0.039 to 0.079 (1 to 2 mm) and the countershaft, front bearing and main shaft bearing are strengthened.
Improved lubrication performance: To ensure proper lubrication in the rear extension bushing, an oil dam is installed in the center of the extension.

Thanks for the reply b110sss

I can't really add to what I have previously said- that box was very, very close in the ratios and had an extremely long 1st. I would have thought that it made sense for a really close box to have a big long first then that gives to ability to close all the ratios up in the rest of the gears but then I'm a wool exporter- not a mechanical engineer...

Is there a chance you had the "normal" Gx5 56A 5spd gearbox? It has a first gear of 3.757 but still recommended for rally and sprints.Even so, Its not the close ratio 56a 5 speed.

I've seen it now on a couple of occassions the gx5 5spd gearbox being sold as a "close" ratio gearbox(as is evident on start of this thread)
While they look similar on the outside, the have very different internals.

Or do you consider the nismo F5C56A (Close ratio 56A 5speed) first gear of 2.676 as an "extremely long 1st"?

Below are the ratios of the 56A 5speeds,

Quote:
Part No. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Rev.
32010-H7251P W/R 3.757 2.374 1.659 1.291 1.000 4.040
32010-H7220N C/R 2.676 1.691 1.398 1.181 1.000 2.877

Also would it be possible to get the internal pics of your gearbox before its finished?

cheers mate

Finding this thread very interesting.....
I have a copy of:
Datsun B110 Competition Tune-Up Manual
published by Nissan Motor Co in 1974 (120Y just released)
In the chassis section they mention 3 gearbox for competition use.
Option 1 is a 4spd with ratios of 3.757, 2.169, 1.404, 1.000
Option 2 is a 4spd with ratios of 2.169, 1.908, 1.350, 1.000
Option 3 is for race use and a 5spd with ratios of 2.676, 1.691,1.398, 1.182, and 1.000

i agree kb110,
The catalogues have caused some confusion and led to misinformation sometimes.
apparently the 5 speed 56a option 1 in japan is referred to as the option 2 in Usa books?and vice versa.

heres a quote from tech wiki, reference 1984 catalog

Quote:
4-Speed
The stock sport transmission is fine for city driving. It has wide-spaced gears to allow a steep 1st for easy takeways.

Done, but due to my limited computer skills is now sitting under the 'forum' section of the photo album. Could someone please bring it into this thread.
I believe that my 56A 5 speed would have been the option 3 as quoted.
Cheers
Dave

Well no response via email for Bettany but I don't know if the email address is correct as I pulled it up off the internet. If anyone has an email they know to be correct please post. I may case of I just simply have to call

As for the overdrive 5th this actually leaves me an option; my local track is a medium to low speed track but the other tracks I might go to are medium to high speed tracks. With a 4.38 rear end and short Hoosier tires 8000 rpms in 4th is 112.

One of the alternatives is to find a 4.625 rear gear, that combined with 20.6" tall tire would allow me to use 3-5th and still have a 115 mph to speed for the long tracks.

It still pains me that I have a full set of mid close and two sets of ultra close main shaft gears for the 56 series 4 speed. Not to mentioned two damaged mid close cluster gears. If cluster gears could be had I'd be able to build at least two more gearboxes, this would be a 15 year supply for me. Wa wa wa.

Tom

The 56A 5-speed is non-overdrive

The photo attached says "60A", which is an overdrive gearbox.

Hi Tom,
Looks as if the text that I wrote did not come over with the photo.
From what I understand this 60A box has been changed around by Cooke so original 4th (1/1) now becomes 5th and there is another gear in between so that may throw any plans you had out to lunch if you were looking at trying to duplicate this box.
Cheers
Dave

Looks awesome

B110SSS,

What are the gear ratios of this bettany 60A gearbox?
Cheers

Rallytwit,
Maybe see if they could make you two custom clusters to suit your boxes?
