Rallytwit,
Ive come to notice that track guys are the ones who tend to realise more about the importance of gear ratios for racing. I guess for a street car its not necessary.. Quote: Dave, while the T50 box is strong the stock ratios still suck. I've been beating up all the options to get a sturdy box with decent ratios that won't cost $2500-$3000........or more. Rallytwit for your application purposes, not only does the t50 ratios suck, it weighs more than 15kg more than a 56 5 speed close ratio which is a few kilos heavier than a 56 4 speed close ratio.in my opinion i wouldn't add a heavy gearbox without close ratio gearsets for a naturally aspirated a-series motor.Might get away with it for turbo or supercharged applications. For track cars, once you go close ratio gearsets, theres no going back to stock wide ratios.Even better if matched with the right diff ratio and tire sizes. Heres a link to a 56A 4 speed close ratio gearbox with straight cut gears being sold on ebay but in portugal. His happy to ship worldwide. USD 1500 buy it now not including shipping and other taxes. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-B110-1200-A12-A14-A15-Nismo-Close-Ratio-Competition-Gearbox-/141880036938?hash=item2108b58e4a:g:wU0AAOSw5IJWedRx&vxp=mtr quote from the seller, who won the championship in his country "..more than the power of the motor gearbox turns out to have more importance because it can harness the power of a more linear way keeping the engine always at high revs without losing between gear changes..."

I have been watching that one. I also inherited a 60 series box which if I can find someone to make a custom second gear will have ratios that equate to a mid-close box. I have the U/C 4 speed in the car now, my first event of the years is in 3 weeks so we shall see how much difference the change from mid to ultra close makes. I still gravitate towards using a more modern box but in talks with my fabricator but the price is a wash.

a12grunt has a good point, power to weight 12-15kg is a big difference
when you consider how light 1200 and 1000 cars can be made however for anything bigger it makes little difference if not better weight balance. Suzuki sierra jimny boxes are also another option for lightweight boxes with strong simple design but close ratio sets are only an option if made in that place in Argentina (german mob) there that supplies euro teams for 1000usd a complete 5 speed setup but they only do phone call business

Hi Tom,
I have just had a new cluster made here in NZ by a business in Wellington - Bettany Gears for my 60A 5 speed. This cluster included 2 helical cut gears and 2 straight cut ones. Total cost NZD 1451 including GST This guy may well be a very viable option for you. He is the man who Reg Cook used to make all his gear kits and has a wealth of knowledge. Also with the NZD pooing itself against the USD at present its got to be a sharp deal for you. Contact number (04) 2985-683. Unfortunately it appears no website- I suspect this guy is very old school... Cheers Dave

Hi,
Sorry I don't but will endeavour to find out and let you know before its put back together. What I can say is they are very good- especially the first 4. The car absolutely rockets off the line whereas my ultra close 56A 5spd had a huge 1st gear and was really all about 2nd/3rd/4th and 5th this one is all about the 1st 4 gears with a bit of ( but perfectably acceptable ) gap between 4th and 5th- probably what you would describe as more of a rally box. Cheers Dave

How is the bettany countershaft made? Did they make a new shaft and are the gears splined or keyed onto the shaft?
