Hi All,
Not too sure about the technicalities of what kind of MAF would be suitable in terms of configuration/capacity wise but I was wondering if a 1.8ltr holden astra MAF would be ok to use in a stock a15efi setup?
Cheers,
Tom

Won't work on a stock EFI, but if you have an aftermarket ECU like Haltech or MegaSquirt it will be OK

Some say MAF is not as good performance as speed-density, others say it is better performance?

1991-1994 Mitsu 1.5 MAF would be the right size, it fits inside the air filter and the Air Cleaner is a round canister type ... easily adaptable

The Haltech I'm going for has an inbuilt MAP sensor. So does that mean I could avoid a MAF altogether?

MAF is not AFM

MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor
AFM = Air Flow Meter

MAF is the high-tech one. It directly measures the mass (amount) of the air.

AFM is the oldest solution. It measures the flow, but the mass varies depending on Temperature and density (MAP base signal). So the ECU combines all three signals to determine the mass of the air.

The 1991-1994 Mitsubishi Precis is the Air Clearer/MAF unit I was thinking of, but is only 80HP, perfect for a stock A15 but may not be enough for a built A15

The 1.8 GM opel Z18XE MAF is cheap, only $40 on eBay or $103 at RockAuto.com and is a more universal/generic shape, would probably be more suitable for a built A15 (good for 120 HP on a barina)

I don't see it listed on Haltech

The megasquirt manual says:
Quote:
The MAF ducting is important to its air flow/output voltage curve, yet very few aftermarket manufacturers know this. If you change any of the ducting, remove/add an air cleaner, or even put your hand in front of the airstream you will see a calibration change. You can see this just by running the engine at idle and remove the air cleaner or stick your hand in front of the airstream while watching the O2 readings.
So installing the entire air filter/ducting will help with that, or you can tweak the MAF file

Quote:
There are a few lessons here:
* MAF sensors (and all other sensors) are not perfect, and won't give you a 'tuning-free' installation, so don't expect them to (i.e. expect some error).
* To be accurate they must be calibrated over the range they will be used in.
* Calibration is likely to be sensitive to installation details, so someone else's results may not apply to your installation.
* MAF sensors will work when calibrated properly.

I really dont like AFM they add to much of that modern look

Yes ...
* Hitachi EFI system for A15E uses Bosch L-jetronic style AFM
* Zenith Power Product factory EFI system for A15 industrial engine uses speed-density (MAP-based) Zenith EFI
