So a guy here in NZ has been screwed over by the transport governing body. His car was at a shop getting some work done. An NZTA inspector was at the shop. They saw there was a label on the body tag over the chassis number. The car was suposedly a very low owner very original B110 sedan.
The engine number of the motor in the car, matches the tag. The number under the (old) stuck on label was looked up by the local constabulary, and shown to have never been registered in NZ.
Either way, the car has been ordered off the road, untill proof of ID can be found. As the NZ made cars had no stamped chassis number, he's kinda screwed.
He's asked the NZ datsun club for help. We're going to write a lEtter to the NZTA on his behalf. Given the way the car market was here way way back then, the car might have been imported from Aussie. (People bought car in to hear from all over the place back in the day.

So any of you Aussie blokes able to throw up a pic of two of B110 body tags? Either cars you've wrecked out, or remove your chassis number from the pic if it might create a security issue for you?

Thanks.

Hi Bart,

I have just had some trouble with my escort rally car after going through cert. There was no chassis number on the computer system because it was registered in '79. I then had to go to VTNZ to get a VIN number so they could put my chassis number into their system to get cert - the ownership papers stated the chassis number but this is where it got interesting and possibly relevant.

A strengthening plate in the escorts gets welded onto the top of the strut towers and covers the stamped chassis number. The ID tag of the body is long gone and in its place is a homemade stamped aluminium plate. The had suspicions that the car had been reshelled but after I was able to show the roll cage homologation papers and the competition log book covering the last 20 years they were happy enough and released a VIN number.

It seems like it is up the their discretion on a case by case basis but I think a letter from the club will help a lot. It could have been a simple error of a spelling mistake when it was first registered that's creating huge problems. Do his ownership papers match the label on the chassis tag or the stamped one? VTNZ probably wont even have a chassis number on the system if it doesn't have a VIN number

The number on the rego papers was the same as the one on the dymo label over the aluminium tag.
The number under it has no record of ever being rego'd in NZ.
