The gears I would think are non-interchangeable as they are for shafts 56 and 60 mm apart?
Have you seen the Dan Hall 5-Speed? Uses a 60L 4-speed case that is modified to fit Hewland Mark 4-8-9 gears

I'm thinking if Datsun mainshaft gears have the same ID you may be able to mix and match gears so that in order to change ratios only the countershaft needs to be remachined. Basically I'm looking for a way to cut the costs, if you just have to mod the countershaft rather than both the countershaft and make a new main shaft gear. It's likely not possible but I'd love to know without taking my 60 series box apart.
I have picked a 4.625 ring and pinion with the intent being that mostly 3-5th will be used but there are two corners on my locks track that will require 2nd gear. As you know the gap between 2nd & 3rd is huge. I just had a 56 series close ratio countershaft repaired and that was reasonable ($600 U.S, if I can get the 60 series modded for, around the same amount it would be total worth it. Tom

Tom,
Are you thinking about interchanging transmission parts to convert a 4 speed to a 5 speed? If so, I know the rear housing on a 5 speed is longer.

Ok thread hijack; I am curious to what the OD on the main shaft is? Namely at the point the gears ride on. My brain is working overtime and I'm curious as to the ability to mix and match Datsun parts. Also what is the ID on the in dual gears?

It is a specialty nut, so regular parts store probably won't carry it. Either Nissan, or carry it in to NAPA and see if they can match it (it is a standard metric nut but with a what do you call it? a locking flange that you dimple with a drift to lock it)

Yes that is it. Buy it from a Nissan dealer? Or aftermarket like rockauto?

Well you can solve that problem - take photos of your gears as you assemble it, and post them here
I wasn't able to find a good photo of the three hubs, only the 1-2 hub The main drive gear is involved in "4th", but is not 4th gear, rather the main drive gear drives the cluster shaft gear. 4th "gear" is actually the input shaft locked to the main shaft, so the input to output ratio is 1:1. The two key parts are the 3-4 Synchro Hub which is splined to the Main shaft (output shaft) and the Main drive gear which is locked to the input shaft. When the box is in 4th, torque is not transmitted via gears

Ok thanks. So main drive gear is 4th gear. Makes sense. Tech Wiki has better images of the gears for the FS5W60L. First time doing a rebuild on a gearbox and fairly straightforward with the rebuild manual and this site. Just making sure I put everything in the right place. All the gears are in excellent shape and cleaned up well. Will post pictures later. There is a hex nut that has tabs that are used to keep this nut in place. The locking tabs don't look too good. Is there a replacement or do I use red loctite so that it doesn't back out?
