Brake Switch wires should be both GY

In this photo one looks GL? Which would cause the dash lamps light when you step on the brake pedal

Both gauges are grounded. Hopefully its just a blown bulb.

All your dash illumiation lights are not working? There are three illumination bulbs in the dash Cluster Gauge, two for speedo and one in center of fuel/temp gauge


Check the headlight switch

* One of the Green/Blue (GL) wire connects to the GL wire of fuse box ('PT' terminal)

Test with light switch OFF - must have 12V at one of the GL wires. If not, check the ParkTail fuse in the Fuse Box

* The other GL wire feeds the dash harness for "parking" lamp circuit

Test with light switch at 1st pull-out position (park lights). Must be 12V on both GL wires. Ditto for 2nd pull-out position (headlights)

If that tests OK, then pull the round connector off the dash, and check for 12V at the GL wire

If the GL wire here is getting 12V, then the problem is in the Cluster Gauge. Check for burned-out bulbs, bad ground, broken/burned circuit trace, or corroded lamp connections

NOTE: There are only three illumination bulbs in the dash Cluster Gauge, two for speedo and one in center of fuel/temp gauge

Tachometer illumination lights are grounded (earthed) via the tachometer body, specifically the tab at the bottom of the tacho being bolted to the dash frame

Check for ground at the tacho case

Speedo illumination and tacho illumination

The other gauge illumination is completely out 100% of the time.

Which lights illuminate?

There are nine lights in the dash

If the metal tab at the bottom is not bolted down (earthed), weird things occur with the lights

Hmm I will look into this. The dash lights definitely illuminate when I hit the brakes but not the "Brake System Warning Lamp"

No dash lamps should light when brake pedal is depressed. Causes
* brake system out of whack (BRAKE warning light)
Or
* wiring problem

BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LAMP
If either half of the dual brake system fails, the brake warning light (BRAKE) glows when brakes are applied. You must stop the car immediately and if you can safely operate with two-wheel brakes, move your car at reduced speed to the nearest service station.

This warning light is also used as the parking brake warning light.
