To my understanding yes it needs to be near shifter but not on it. I remember s15 had on console from memory not shifter.

Today I learned something new. It's also required in USA, but I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for it -- not even heard anyone ever mentioning it before

Quote:
49 CFR 571.102 - Standard No. 102; Transmission shift position sequence

S3.2 Manual transmissions. Identification of the shift lever pattern of manual transmissions, except three forward speed manual transmissions having the standard "H" pattern, shall be displayed in view of the driver at all times when a driver is present in the driver's seating position.

yep, ADRs require the shift pattern to be displayed on or near the shifter. It's been a common defect item up here for many years.

I learnt this in my 1200 for rwc. In current datsun I drew it up on word and printed it out, contacted it next to ashtray. It's there for one less hassle and dog leg box pattern

I have an old 18 speed road-ranger gearbox pattern card in my ute.
I have used it to confuse the unwary a few times with great results, but never had the boys in blue get up me about it.

Yep. Its a rule in Queensland. I had a diagram drawn on the back of a business card taped to the ashtray on my ute.
