In my ongoing quest for a cheap strong box with decent ratios I noticed Z20 powers cars with 63 series 5 speed box have 1.9 2nd gear. My thought was if it was possible for source one of these and a B210 5 speed, then I could take the bellhousing/front case of the B210 tranny and put it on the Z20 5 speed and make a mid close 5 speed for an A-series.

Anyone know if this is possible?

Tom

Not a bad idea. I'm all eyes and ears.

Matt if this doesn't work my next step is going to be using the Auto bell housing I have to adapt a Ford type 9 or type E.

I am subscribed. If a new flange is needed I can make one. Then weld it onto the 63 trans.

The word here is the 63 front cases swap

There has always been talk of making an A-series 5-speed by using a 4-speed front case on the (more) common L-series 63A 5-speed but that doesn't pan out because there were no A-series 63-series 4-speeds

We went out to classic car swap meet this morning (the wife wanted to as part of her birthday) and by chance found a guy selling a B210. He mentioned he had a 5 speed out of a 76 B310 that needed bearings and I told him I'd swap it for 60 series trans as well as give him some gaskets that I can't use. He's off on vacation mext week but hopefully the week after I'll manage to get the 63 series.

It doesn't look like anyone addressed the issue I thought they would. L/Z/etc have a larger input shaft diameter than the A series. If gears are integral to the shaft then you would need to machine down the end to fit in the a series spigot.

Good point. Yes, the end of the input shaft is machined smaller while the shaft itself is the same. The A-series version even uses the same clutch disc as the L14 engine (bigger splines, but small 180mm diameter of the L14 + A12/A14)

* L-series: 16 mm bore pilot
* A-series: 12.2 mm bore pilot

I was actually aware of this. There are two choices, swap input shafts or turn the Z series. I would likely opt for the later because mixing used gears isn't the best thing to do. It would probably be fine but why chance it.
