Hi!

I have to change my Datsun 1200 rectangular speedo meter, to a round one to obtain some free space, in this way i can move a round speedmeter to right side. I move it the to right side because i install bmc underdash and the actual rectangular speedmoter fit of speed cable touch the bmc.
I read on forum and im focus on Datsun 280 z speedometer and tachometer. I have 13" wheels

The sppedometer 280z will fit on my actual Datsun 1200 speed cable? The speed will be incorrect? What will be the best alternative speedometer choice?

i read this following setence and What does it means?

"Drill a hole for the trip meter shaft through the back

Many thanks

Luis

Yes, cable fits 280Z speedometer

1. Swap the mounting cups as the 280Z unit is deeper
2. Drill a hole for the trip meter shaft through the back
3. The face is to large for the opening in the 1200 housing, so carefully reduce the diameter by 1/8 inch

Hi!

On Ebay, exists speedometers from Datsun 280z with dual scales kmh and mph. If i set up one of this into my Datsun 1200 the pointer will gives the correct speed reading in mph and Kmh on moment. My doubt is the Kms or Mph on counter counting? It will counts meters and kilometers from the start point to the arrival point?. or count miles

It is possible have a Speed sensor gear? and in this case i will choose a digital speedometer at my choise?

Please let me know

Thanks

Luis

Yes, 280Z speedometer reads correctly with different size tires. The difference is the speedometer cable drive gears in the transmission

There are different 280Z speedometers:
* Mile primary, Kilo secondary (odometer counts miles)
* Kilo primary, Mile secondary (odometer counts kilos)

Hey DD, how would having the drive gear in the transmission help the speedo read correctly? It still can't tell how many revolutions the wheels have compared to distance covered, can it?

You are right that the speedometer or drive gears do not tell how many revs/distance. The engineers at the car company figure that out, then specify the appropriate cable-drive gears to be included in the transmission

For example, Datsun 1200
* with 21.7 inch diameter tires and 3.9 final drive: 17T speedometer drive gear
* with 21.7 inch diameter tires and 4.1 final drive: 18T speedometer drive gear

280Z is similar: with different size tires and/or final drive ratios, different transmission speed gears are used

Bottom line: Same speedometer is used with different size tires. The drive gears are changed to match. For Datsun 1200 4-speed, the factory had these gears available: 15T, 16T, 17T, 18T and 19T gears ... allowing you to use different size tires and still have the speedometer read correctly
