Now this may have been discussed before but I did a quick techwiki search and found nothing.

So I was in at the engine machinist shop to get a block done and we were talking about the good pistons that were
in the dud A15 block. They were actually E5 mazda pistons which from calculations give you a slightly higher comp ratio
Bought new rings - ok

E5 - Mazda 323 fwd 1980-85
Interestingly these came out in a TURBO version E5T (but only in Japan) BUT, the ford laser turbo, which is bacically the same
car, was availiable here.

So where am I going with this?
Does anyone know of a reason why you couldn't use Ford Tx3 turbo pistons in an A15 boosted application
instead of the expence of getting custom forged ones?

whats wrong with original cast datsun pistons? they hold well and have good ring sizes
Then corolla people dont even bother with their slugs as they are like L series with
massive thick ring thickness. On the other end of the scale look at vitara pistons
used by Honda guys, they run up to 24psi and 550hp with these cast cheapies on their D16.

The problem with the originals are they aren't forged, therefore you are limited to about 160hp and 15psi boost. With forged pistons sometimes they'll sometimes even survive a poor tune (before dyno tuning became affordable, cast pistons used to break all the time)

Something like these?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/76mm-D16-Y ... N-COATED-Honda-Civic-CRX-

76 mm - check
19mm pin - check
Gudgeon to piston deck height ?
Valve clearance ?
Compression ratio with a H 89 head?

You could try the acl piston catalogue for some of those specs? I have a copy of it, can't remember where I downloaded it but I'm sure it's still around.

Yes thats them Dave YCP are the crazy things from china
that seem to handle almost 10 years of abuse in some D16
turbos making over 300kws.
It depends on how low comp you want to go and which head
the E15ET pistons are even lower comp than the vitaras
valve clearances are a mystery but they look fairly dished.
The high comp versions could probably be used also with a shave
I guess the honda d16 tuners want the low comp otherwise
they would use their own high comp versions by ycp.
It seems that these ycp cast alloy ones at 75/76 mm offer
some kind of strength that is formidable vs larger sizes
otherwise there is no way these guys would use 24+psi

The YCP are superior to factory units in G16b engines

This is what I was thinking of http://mitsubishilinks.com/fsm/acl_pistonproducts_pp99.pdf, they have piston specs for many models in there. Sorry if I'm a bit too slow. I'll enjoy watching the build!
