Hi guys,

Probably a silly question but will sandwiching intercooler in front of the radiator cause any issue?

From what I have been reading, intercooler cools the hot exhaust air from the turbo by sucking in the “cool” atmospheric air and blowing our “hot” air.

With the radiator attached directly behind it will be affected by the hot air coming out of the intercooler?

Kind regards,
Ron.

Yes, it will reduce the airflow to the radiator and increase temperature -- same as with most cars which have an Aircon condenser in that same spot. that's why a larger radiator is used and additional holes cut in the core support along with dual fans

Thanks dd :)

So it is better to get a bigger radiator and a smaller intercooler?

Cheers

It is better to get the size needed. But it's hard to figure out the exact size, so most just fit the biggest units they can. Often its less expensive too as small radiators cost about the same as large ones

Say if you are fitting a stock SR20DET, the factory has done the sizing work for you. Just use a stock SR20DET radiator (which fits in a 1200) and a stock SR20DET intercooler. You don't need anything bigger for stock power levels

On the other hand, the largest intercooler looks toughest and provides room for power upgrades

Also although hard to fit on some conversions etc.. people often (ive been guilty of it) over look the value of a fan shroud be it factory or custom they help largely to direct the air where it is needed hence better cooling.
