Anyone ever stuff a Chevy S10 V6 into a datsun 1200?

I've been watching the show "Roadkill" and the two guys did it to a 71 Datsun 240z. I wonder if that engine would fit in a 1200 engine bay?

I'd like to build a ratty Coupe project one day with the lightest most powerful compact carburetored USDM v6 engine I can find. Just for fun. GM products would be economical. Any suggestions?

There have been several Chevy V8 -powered sunnys, and the 4.3L V6 is a variation of the small-block V8 -- just the same but missing two cylinders. By contract the Chevy 2.8/3.0/3.1/3.4 is a different design smaller, lighter but still with iron block

I'm not up on the latest V6s but the older ones weigh almost as much as V8s. It's something crazy like a 25lb difference. Aluminum blocks are in general thicker than the cast iron equivalent so those aren't as light as one expects either. I also seem to recall that due to the harmonics the V6 iron blocks end up being thicker than the V8s as well I could be wrong on this though as it's been years since I looked into them seriously.

The one thing I do remember is that bare Ford 5.0 block weighs 125lbs, which is pretty amazing considering an A-series block weighs 75lbs.

One thing the V6 does have going for it is packaging. So if you have a 300hp V8 & a 300hp V6 and the V6 will fit without major surgery it's a no brainer.

Back to the Z car I've had two friends with V8 240s/280s and the cars were actually lighter with the V8 installed in place of the straight six.

I love the sound of 6 cylinder engines but it's hard to deny the pluses of a V8. OK now that I've taken the thread off on a tnagent........

what about the GM Buick V6 mototrs. Holden used them here in AUS from 1989-2005ish. 3.8l V6, very compact and can make crazy horsepower.

There is a guy here in Perth that drags a 120Y with a GM V6. You can buy a good 2nd had unit here in Perth for about $250 and there is heaps of them.

Not sure what GM used them for in the US, if at all, but that would be my bet if i was keen on that idea.

The Buick/ecotec V6 units use a counter balance cam shaft to balance out the harmonics as it has an odd fire order.
On a side note the 3.8l V6 motors make a wild sound when setup with a separate twin exhaust system!

I think its known as the L27 GM V6 in your neck of the woods

The LN3 was replaced by the 3,791 cc (3.8 L; 231.3 cu in) L27 in 1991-1992 and produced 170 horsepower (130 kW) from 1992 onward, this engine was referred to as the Series I 3800, or 3800 TPI (Tuned Port Injection). In Australia, the LN3 was also replaced by the L27 by Holden who used the engine in their series 2 (1991) VN Commodore range. However, the Australian L27 retained the LN3's one piece upper intake and lower plenum. Power was still boosted to 127 kW (170 hp) for the Holden L27, before being boosted to 130 kW (177 PS; 174 hp) in the revised VR Commodore in 1993. The L36 made its debut in 1995.

1986 Buick Grand National, 3.8 liter 235 hp. On a cold day, it was faster than the 5.7 liter Corvette

I remember getting the Autoweek magazine with Buick GNX on the cover -- 276hp limited edition of 547. Last of the american muscle cars. It moved to FWD in 1988

While I'll always be a fan of the Grand National, it seems like it'd be a super tight fit in a Datsun Sunny as it fills the heck out of a big old G body engine bay. I'm at a hair under 300 rwhp in my 1200 with a lightly modded SR20. Wasn't cheap but its still Nissan and gets 35 mpg! Heck, guys are making 200 hp on a turbo A series, but that'll add up too breaking transmissions and such.
