Hello Datsun racers,
I have been using Carillo H-beam con rods for decades, and occasionally Crower H-beam and I-beam rods. These have been the gold standard in the USA for racing for 30+ years.

I am now looking at Molnar rods and their 4340 heat treated "X" series rods. They are an H-beam design, but stronger and significantly lighter than the Carillo or Crower. Carrillo 133mm (stock A14/15 length) rods were around 410-420 grams and we could make sets down to 380 grams, but that took a lot of work. Crowers were in the 470-480 gram range.

The Molnar rods should come from the factory at the weight of a highly modified-by-the-customer Carillo rod. Price for a set of Molnar rods would be $1000/ set of 4 including ARP2000 bolts.

If I make a run of (40) rods, would anyone be interested in a set? I am looking at both 133mm (stock A14/15 rod length) and 136mm rods. [136mm rod length is what I commonly use in A14 race engines with shorter pistons and in the 77mm stroke A13 that I run.]

Thanks, Peter

(Sorry I don't post much.)

That's good that their is good quality parts for a series. I'm not sure how good the I beam rods are that you can get on eBay or max speeding or whatever they are called but they are hard to pass due to price. Iv heard standard rods are strong once shot peened, is this true?

Stock Nissan rods are strong w/o shot peening. Even stronger with it. For 140HP sustained load at 8500 RPM with 14:1 compression ratio the custom rods give durability. But for 100hp @ 7000 rpm the stock rods do fine

The other reason to go with custom rods is to reduce weight and thus gain a bit of "free" HP (even one-tenth of 1 HP adds up after a million revolutions -- say a single endurance race). The stock rods I think cannot be lightened to 380 gm. Stock A14 rods are over 500 gm. This becomes important in class racing -- where allowed modifications are limited -- so the little things you can do are what makes winners
