Ignition timing issues

This is doing my head in !
I have brought a new set of points and have put them in the A12 in our Ute.
The distributor was hard up against its maximum advance and was at 12 deg
Thought it was a tooth out but it seems that if I go one tooth the timing is either to advanced or to retarded.
Not sure if it’s related but it seems to backfire through the intake when you plant your foot even with the timing at 10 deg before tdc.
Any help would be awesome.

Have you tried adjusting the position of the plate on the distributor? There's a second bolt there underneath.

Incorrect gap can cause backfires. Try checking it again

By the way, why are you trying to get 12 degrees? Spec is 7 degrees and that runs well

Thanks for your replys. I didn't realise there was another bolt so will try that.

I am aiming for 7 but only seem to get to 12deg before and on the next tooth its well after TDC

I only eyeballed the point gap to 0.5mm so i had better get the feeler gauge out.

Better get the feeler gauges out not wise to trust the eyes especially when they are full of dust seeing as you poor bastards haven't seen much rain of late up there.

Better yet find a dwell meter and set them that way really cheap to buy these days as so few cars use points now search ebay good ones are a bargain second hand and most were made before China flooded us with cheap and nasty rubbish

Thanks for your replies. Timing sorted now but now the carb seems to giving us the run around. Im sure this ute doesn't want to get out of the driveway!
