Hi everybody,

I just bought myself a datsun gx, but it has a small problem, it doesn't seem to want to go past 5k rpm and then she bogs down, i tuned the carbs, synch, float level..and set the timing 7 degrees btdc..but still the same problem..could it be that it isn't getting enough fuel? Mechanical problem? Timing?

I would much appreciate some advice on this matter

You could have a problem with ignition, but then it would also misfire...
if it just loses it's "puff" might be not enough fuel ?

Running out of fuel results in lean condition
* running lean = coughing, jerking, backfiring
* bogging down = slow acceleration/no acceleration when the throttle is given under certain conditions

Bog is a vague term that may mean different things to different people. Here, I interpret what you call bog to mean the engine flattens out and doesn't want to rev or pull at rpm in gear -- Hot Rod magazine
The article says this not wanting to rev can be a fuel pump/fuel filter problem. So do a Fuel pump pressure test

If I keep my foot on the gas it goes down to 4k rpm and doesn't want to pull, like i hit a wall..Im definitely going to check the fuel pressure..its still running on a mechanical pump..the fuel filter looks rather new..How do I check the mechanical pump for faults? Is there mabye a diaphragm that can tear?

Yes, there is a diaphragm that can tear but it's extremely rare and then it would probably have no pressure (engine won't run). More common pressure problems include dirt in the internal valves or a weakened spring

To check the mechanical pump for faults 1) do a pressure test 2) do a volume test. The volume test needs zero special tools. The link above to the pressure test explains both test

If pressure and volume are good, then the problem is not the fuel pump. Newer A14 carburetors have an internal filter that can get plugged, but GX sidedraughts don't have that to worry about

Another common problem with revving is when the points dwell is off. Set the dwell to spec OR install new points and gap to spec

Thanx I will do the pressure and volume test from the link provided thanx and get back to you guys, the car has electronic ignition so no need to set dwell..i'll also check the plug gaps, mabye that has an effect
