G'day legends,

I am almost at the end of my 1200 coupe build (3 years and counting) and was just after some information or advise.

I have an SR20DE with a R30 Stumpy behind it and a Shortened R31 Diff.

I am just wondering if anyone can help with either of the following:

Is there a factory shaft that works? (doubt it haha)
Is there a shaft that can be shortened?
Am I better to just get a custom one made, if so has anyone used anywhere in Sydney to get a shaft made?

I have a bit less than 4 months before I need this car at my wedding so any help would be great.

I don't know the specific answer but here are some general tips. Hope it helps


* The japan-built R31 diff uses a Nissan flange, while the aus-built R31 diff has a six-bolt flange. Most use a 2-piece shaft (two tubes, three joints)

Since both parts you are using (gearbox and diff) come out of skylines, try asking the question at r31skylineclub.com. People are always asking about making one-piece shafts. Maybe a bluebird 910 wagon or something might work
* The stock 1200 shaft is 1334 mm overall length, and it would need to be shortened to fit the longer R31 diff head
* R31 shaft from what I understand is alreay too short for the 1200


* Many shafts cannot be shortened due to the way the are constructed at the factory. So what shops do is use a new shaft and transer only the input yoke and output flange to the new shaft (making cost of shortening nearly same as a custom shaft)

Maybe. Shop around, because different shops will charge vastly different amounts. In my part of the world, from $150 for shortening up to $500 for the same thing! New custom shaft prices seem more consistent $300-500

The more I think of it a custom one might be the go, with shortening and actually finding another shaft I will probably be in the same ball park with cost. May as well pay for a brand new quality one.

I mean my coupe will be worth $30,000 when its finished right?

I'll keep everyone updated on costs and where I end up going.

I had a shaft made for a CA18DET box to Borg Wargner diff I used a drive shaft company to make mine based on measurements I took (flange to flange/inlet). They used the yoke off the original S13 tail shaft which I took from the donor car and made the rest to suit. Being a Borg Warner diff it was easy to get new parts as it is same as Commodore, if you are using the standard 1200 diff you may have to use the old diff flange as well.
I had a thick wall shaft made to handle high HP, it was only 1100mm or 1000mm long from memory and had all new unis etc. I paid $600 for that shaft and it was ready in about 2 days.
