Hey guys,
Few questions about the 63a 5 speeds for the A series.

1) how much does it usually cost to buy one?
2) can they be made to work with a cable rather than hydraulics?
3) can the clutch pedals used in cable clutch cars work if converting to hydraulic?

Thanks

The prices vary dependent on location as little as $250 and as much as $1000. I think $500 is fairly typical.

Unlike the 60 series which has the round hole in the bellhouisng for the cable, the 63 series doesn't. I double checked mine to be sure.

I can't definitively answer the pedal question but as the hydraulics use a push rod and the cable needs to be pulled I'd expect they are different

If you weren't already aware of it the 63 series has an advantage over the 60 series in that there is a mid close ratio gearset for the 63 series. You just need to find the gearset from a Z20 powered 200SX.

On the 56 and 60, hydraulic and cable use the same pivot point. So perhaps you can convert the 63 to cable too ... but you'd have to figure out where to drill the hole in the case and maybe modify the carrier sleeve?

Converting to hydraulic is proably eaiser and definitely works better. Yes you can use the stock 1200 calbe clutch pedal drill a hole in the pedal below the pedal shaft for pushrod (the cable goes above the shaft for pull) See photos in our tech article Hydraulic Conversion

Ddgonzal, just been looking at the two 63a gearboxes that I have been offered , both already have a hole on the right side (perfect for Aus, UK etc) for the clutch cable, you can also see the the casting mark where the oval shape hole for the clutch for would come out from... Surely one could use the a fork from a 56a 5 speed and cut the hole out for it and run a cable for simplicity?

Will these fit into 1200s without cutting the tunnel?

Rallytwit, that's odd the two boxes I've been offered have a hole for the clutch cable, you can also see the casting outline on the bell housing where the cable clutch ones would have the fork coming through. Wonder if you can cut the hole out and run a cable.

Rallytwit, do you have any info on the ratios for the mid-close Z20 63a? Is this in Z20 powered 720's too? I've got a 63a in my car and keen to get some closer ratios for circuit racing. I believe the std wide ratios are 3.382, 2.013, 1.312, 1, 0.854. Cheers

Rallymaster I could be wrong; there are a couple of tabs on the bellhousing that could be for the cable but unlike my 60 series I didn't see the retangle casting mark for the clutch fork.

Volodkovich 2nd gear is taller it's 1.921 versus the 2.013. The 1.921 ratio was in the Z20 powered cars HL510 and 200SX.

Nissan part numbers are 32210-W8900 for the cluster gear and 32250-W8900 for 2nd gear.

Rallytwit, hmm this is interesting now, both the gearboxes came from USA B310 Coupes, now from my research these never came with 63a boxes. The two boxes I've been offered both have 60 stamped on the side which I've don't think 63a had?

Perhaps these a 60L doglegs which have been converted to a hydraulic clutch?

What makes me think this is they have 60 stamped on the side, the hydraulic fork is coming out of the left hand side, now all the 63a boxes I've seen have never had this. The bell housing also has the hole for the clutch cable to run through on the top right side.
Plus you can see the casting for where the clutch fork would have been.

What do you think?
