Tom, I understand that it would be a daunting task to take on and that it may be easier for you to put an SR20 in the car. But I believe in the turbo A12 so much i'm happy to help it happen.

What if I build a turbo EFI kit, fly over, fit and tune it for you within your budget?

D, The SR16VE was an N1 engine, so I've updated the post to show that.

Tom, It probably all depends on if you like to just be out on the track and having fun reliably, In which case a STD SR would be hard to beat for that(as others have said). The Turbo A12 would be faster not just in a straight line, but in the corners and under brakes. I'm confident in the A12a turbo being reliable at 15Psi on E85.
I certainly didn't mean to put any pressure on your decision making. I just love the A12T (done properly(disclamer, lol))

Thats could have been a tired N1?,
healthy stock N1 pulsars up against
newer stock same weight sr20ve pulsars
pipped them in different japanese shows.

I reckon the A12 turbo is awesome and
sadly no one has made a good cast manifold
for them so they would be easier to do.
The aftermarket efi mani some people got
hold off from south afrika would have made
a good setup if both bits were attainable.

I see alot of new cars with 1.2 and 1.4 turbo
engines and they fly, good economy but super
complicated and expensive repairs unlike the
A12 which is so cheap, simple and now proven.

The SR20VE model heads are rare so how long into the
future they can be maintained wont be like A series.
I havent kept up with racing series in Oz but
remember an 808 Simon that was in a different class.

It ran a b6 turbo I think or bp but the B6 heads are
also easily fit on an A series and that lends itself
to a plethora of turbo manis, parts and ecu choices
as per Miata world contingent. I know Rob doesnt do
the kit anymore but its not more involved than the
BMW K1100 head on the Mini A series that many do and
very cheap B6 parts everywhere and Cheaper than Gx heads.

There are many 160kw atw Miatas on the streets worldwide
surprisingly these guys have a proven formula of shaving
b6 heads 2mm!!! mild clean up with cams, itbs or 48mm carbs!
modded dizzie for carbs or many ecu mods/choices, headers etc.

Everyone knows the A15 blocks are proven stout bottom ends that
can fit the B6 pistons for those restricted to datsun engines.
For boost the A12 can be fit with the Festiva/laser tx3 turbo
B series heads as well as other model make using the B series.

So thats prob my choice in the wall of text, a B6 headed A15
with 41-48 mikuni carbs as Im a fossil still scared of lectics,
shaved 2mm head, miata club choise of camshaft for 160kws,
miata club chosen off the shelve headers, stock b6 pistons
on cheap spool h beam rods, aftermarket matchbox ignition etc.
There are a plethora of cheap billet manis for itbs like 4age 20v
and many ecu options as well if you are able to efi.

Simon,

First I'll answer your questions from page 2; the A12A is a stock short block so I would use the GX head on the car now or repair the other GX head I have. The head on the car has been milled dowjn significantly and the static compression would be 9-1 on an A12, the other head would be 8.5-1.

The goal it's to keep the car somewhere between just go out and have fun and crush the competition. 160atw would bring me even with the front running cars in my group as far as powe to weight goes. I run two vintage races and 4 track days per year which amounts to 12 hours. I'd like to be able to run no less than 3 seasons (36hrs) but the naively want to go 5 seasons like I did on the A15. So if keeping the motor down around the 140atw mark meant 50-60hrs versus 180ate would need a rebuilds every 12hrs I'd give up the extra power for not having rebuild as often.

Now as for putting pressure on my decision I was actually looking for the feedback you're providing me great information. While I take a good bit of pride in the fact that I'm driving the heels off my car I'd be nice prevent drivers who aren't driving near as well simply motor by on the long straights.

If we do go the turbo route be forewarned I may PM you with questions.

Ask away! I'm serious about the offer too!

D, It was a healthy SR16VE N1. Good enough to win the U1600 class at the Nationals 4 weeks ago anyway. And I only tuned it the week before that.

Simon at the very least we should talk budget, it's one heck of an offer, you've done a heck of a lot of development work and it would be awesome to put it to use on my car.

Let me know how you wish to correspond (email PMs etc).

Tom, what's the capacity limit of the class you run? I assume it's 2.5 litres due to all the L series cars. Also, is there/ what is the multiplication factor for turbocharging. In Australia its 1.7m so an 1171 A12 is 1.990 litres. A 1488 cc A15 is 2.530 litres, however a 1390 cc A14 is 2.360 litres. So that A15 might be too big. I'd hate to get banned for 30 cc's. Wasn't somebody selling an A14 crank in the classifieds? My hope would be a turbo A14, but even an A12 would be sweet. Can't imagine what the reaction from the 'Grunter' runners would be like.

PS a Grunter is what the big bore long stroke L series engines were called back in Group G rallying. Most runners found it cheaper to run rotary's.
