if Nissan was more pigheaded it would have developed the A series to an A20-A22
OHV, crossflow AY like and luckily Chevy did it for them by overhauling the iron duke
to a new design that as Matt also mentioned looks like a copy of the A series.

This is an amazing opportunity for you US guys, Im envious as we cannot get them
in OZ or Japan. There is a 2.4L stroker kit and with a small turbo 7 years ago
a fan put out 313 without any sweat to its architecture.

Id be happy with bike carbs on an A20 2L version would just need a Schneider cam
for $80 USD NOS 264 grind and 160hp without any sweat and 140lbs of torque.

Not into the cavalier inlet, there are more compact choices and battery could be
the size of a small milk carton these days.

Its a Triumph and also the AY12 motor if further loyally developed by Datsun/Nissan
would have turned out to be this Chevy beast.

Its crossflow but with more efficient wedge chambers for the road, looks like a copy
of the Nissan A series, bolts up to a T5, 2 and 2.2L available stock with stroker kits
also to take it to 2.4L! never sweats with schneider $80 NOS 264 degree camshaft to
make 160hp with headers.

not a fan of the cavalier inlet compared to the s-10 or sonoma

I feel like I'm keeping it Triumph with the Datsun engine, since Datsun licenced the A-series from Triumph originally, apparently. So I figure I'm using the engine Triumph engineers would have designed if they had the time and money.
I'm still looking into the L-series, trying to find one locally that I can do some measurements on, but that Chevy inline 4 sounds cool. A crossflow would really help me with size constraints.

The vortec 2200 sure does look attractive, now that I check it out. I'll look around at the junkyard next time I'm there.
(It's a huge drag fitting any sort of large transmission in this car. There's no transmission tunnel, which is nice, but the frame is really narrow, getting down to only maybe 20cm between the frame rails just in front of the differential. The 63 series transmission fits beautifully, though.)

Oh, this is a side note: I'd been looking for a set of motorcycle throttle bodies for a while, to stick on my A series, but there's not a lot in the 1500 CC range. Then a friend pointed out that 1500CC's at 5000 RPM is the same as 750CC's at 10,000 RPM. Duh. So, my next major project will probably be putting a hayabusa or similar set of throttle bodies on the A.

Vortec 2200 with T5 -- T5 is not that big. Plus the S10 has the shorty extension housing shorter than the Datsun transmission

According to the Weber book, it looks like more like 600cc at 10,000 rpm needs the same carb size as 1500cc at 5,000 RPM -- for like engines. Japanese motorcycle heads flow a lot more than A-series heads, so even smaller would be better for balancing power/flexibility

Datsun used a single 32mm bike carb on the Sunny Cab 998cc (A10) @ 5000 rpm. Datsun used 38mm CV carb on A12 @ 6400 rpm (83bhp)

As DD pointed the t5 is a tiny box, a work of art
and the reason it was chosen by so many makes.
Its easy to work on, a modular design with only
4 bolts to its bellhousing and infinite ratios avail.
The world class version is the one to get post 1984.

the Chevy 2.2 you can say was copied from Triumph then :)
just as Nissan copied the original A series etc.

The 2L version would be enough with R1 bike carbs
which are 41mm and used on ka24de if you want to
keep it simple or just run the vortech ecu as there
is hardly any gain except complication running quads.
You can run good headers and 2.2L throttle body which
could be a tad larger or fit another bigger chev item
to feed the Schneider camshaft.

2L crossflow A series like engine is hard to beat
even with big cam should have enough snap to scare
Rabid Rabbis into Trannie nuns!

Many, many, many cars were fitted with a T-5 -- see wikipedia:Borg-Warner_T-5_transmission. Avoid the 1982-1984 versions (non-World Class) because (while they are strong enough for an A-series engine) the shift feel is not as good as a stock Nissan-Aichi gearbox.

A14 in a Triumph Spitfire ... There is about, maybe, 10mm of space between the hood and the oil fill cap on the valve cover ... So: what's the height of an L16/18
Probably a lot taller. I noticed that not one of the photos in our tech article shows an L-series with stock air cleaner in a B110 -- only the PB110 with its different bonnet. All the photos show either side drafts or Weber DGV with low-profile air cleaner
