That's a nice looking swap. Seems to fit good. But how does it go? Not much torque from that engine but it does love to spin...

Good question

one answer:

There is a mechanism to increase torque -- final drive ratio aka diff ratio. Higher ratios, such as 4.11 instead of the regular 3.90, will deliver more torque to the rear wheels, resulting in quicker acceleration and better pulling. So it will compensate for a less torquey engine

However the downside to larger ratios is lower speed for a given RPM. For example 3.90 @ 6000 rpm is 150 kph in fourth gear. But 4.11 is only 140 kph

This is actually a plus for an engine like the 4A-GE shown here, as it loves to rev up. The higher ratio lets it spin up faster, and its 6600 rpm peak power lets the car go just as fast (top speed) as a regular engine with higher gearing

ca18de spins easily to 8300 rpm with good oil
if you change lifters to solid from vg30de and
other nissan engines, camshaft and nistune
you have a 4age killer but even stock will kill
4age as noticed by corolla peeps hence it is
so popular for rolla swaps.

was reading this review from 1986 of the Toyota FΧ-16
Quote:
Like its 4A-GE–equipped stablemates, though, the FX 16 doesn't have much low-and midrange torque. The engine revs freely and easily, but nothing very spectacular starts happening until about 4700 rpm. A fast launch from a stop requires a merciless foot on the gas and a quick step off the clutch pedal.
I take "nothing spectacular" means it has as much power as an A14 until it hits 4700 rpm, then watch out

Another way to look at it, it's a lot more than a stock A14

A14 80hp @ 6000RPM, 75ft-lb
4A-GE 112-120hp @6600RPM, 97ft-lb

In both high-RPM power (peak power) and low-RPM HP (torque) it goes a lot more than an A14. Feel is very different but the performance is real

A14 80hp @ 6000RPM, 75ft-lb
4A-GE 112-120hp @6600RPM, 97ft-lb
CA16DE 122 hp @6400 rpm 101 lb⋅ft
CA18DE 131 hp @6400 rpm 117 lb⋅ft

Nissan wins!

200usd HKS 272 cams add another 15-20hp
100USD HKS headers another 5-8hp

ca16de is way under estimaged but not by rolla guys

Always been in 2 minds with transplants.
Besides the fact that an A-series is limited in hp , there is weight and cost to consider. Add a 4A CA or SR , you,ll going to end up with a car weighing an extra 100 KG - 150 KG and a hefty price tag

very true

Probably better just bore out an A15 to 78mm bore
10.5 comp, H89 head with casting slags cleaned up,
electronic ignition, GX profiled stock camshaft,
headers, Roland manifold with 32/36 weber.

90-110hp guaranteed depending on cam grind

but around 3k investment at minimum for most folks.

ca16de or ca18de or 4age will likely need a rebuild
by now so about the same price as for an A16 but
engineering, trans tunnel work, h165/h190 diff
doubles that price very quickly and weight as mentioned.

Otherwise for Nissan brand originality and pride

1. A series with twin cam head by a Mazda, Vauxhall hybrid setup.

2. Ca18de euro 4 port head, ca20e bottom end, spool mitsu 4g63 H rods,
( fit with a slight shaving off the mains side), Honda cast K20 or b20
85.5 or 86mm pistons (same valve angles as ca18de) 2021cc or 2045cc
Billet inlet adaptors to suit toyota blacktop itbs, HKS Cams, map ecu

3. Chevy ATK OHV 2 or 2.2 with D A T S U N rocker cover :)
colored in datsun colors, bike carbs, stainless headers,
schneider cam, t5 box, h190 diff.

Hey D , Ive been told a CAdet ( 125 kw / 225 nm ) conversion is about $7K if you do most of the labor . Then watch the price skyrocket when you want 250 / 300 KW,s.
Basic A14 turbo should land upwards of 100 RwKw,s and is reliable as people have done nearly 100K klms , light nimble and no sloutch . That would probably set you back under $3K
As for originality and pride , us Purists are a dying breed

TBH never seen a Ca18de last longer than a ca16de or 4age though.
I often saw with 300-400,000 clicks vs ca18de which have issues
below 150,000 kms. Its probable the CA engine vacuum setup suits fwd better
than rwd? Also seen many ca20e engines with over 400k kms.
Either way timing belts, oil spills and cracking seals are a problem.
While 4age dont seem to have these issues common on the ca engines
these 16v engines are all very economical vs toyota 3sge engines.

I personally love pushrods more than later more efficient ohc/dohc.
Personally looking at an ohv diesel from Nissan to power my own
version of Nissan based copy of the Saab H series motorhomes.

Nissan grilles and lights, suspension and running gear with the rest
all sheet alloy, wood and steel bus like frame.
