I am very new to the car modding scene, and you might say I am a bit over my head with my current project. I am currently installing a 6 gear, SR20DET into a 1988 Nissan 1200. The first thing I am confused about is:

In the general SR swap thread it states "Find the 5 wires needed to run the engine and connect them to the 1200 wiring system" linked here SR swap Thread

Now how can I spot there 5 wires and where exactly do I connect them.

As you can tell I know very little about cars/engine but I really wanted to do all the work myself.

So far I have been able to custom mount the engine and transmission to the truck.

Hi chaggitto, welcome to the club

Is a good question "Find the 5 wires needed to run the engine and connect them to the 1200 wiring system"

Most guys totally re-do the wiring system, often purchasing a new SR swap harness. However it is not necessary to start from scratch. If you got the SR engine/ECU harness from a Silvia or other SR donor car, you can patch it into the existing 1200 harness (wires are STARTER, IGN, 12V, GROUND/EARTH). The 5th wire is FUEL PUMP wire from the SR20 harness

Follow the Wiring link in the SR engine swap article. There are many wires in the SR engine harness, but you only need to identify a few of them to connect up. Use severals relays and new fuses. It's a chore but you'll have OEM EFI -- power and economy both with awesome smoothness. Many of the DIY guys use icehouse's Can/AM relay module to make it easier -- with built-in safety

1200 harness -- see Wiring
* STARTER black/yellow wire
* IGN black/white wire (goes to coil)
* 12V from Fusible Link
* GROUND/EARTH black wire/negative battery cable
All these wires are on the back of the Ignition Switch, and also go out into the engine bay. See Wiring#Ignition Switch

* The Datsun 1200 wiring harness has all the wires needed for the SR20 starter and alternator

* Add relays for safety (both crash/fuel pump safety, and electrical current wiring fire safety)

These relays come out of an SR20/CA18 Nissan S13:
Not just the ECU/Fuel Pump/EFI relays, but also have fuses for other things such as AC, headlights, etc.



Or an S110 Silvia EFI relay cluster from the Junkyard



Or you could get the CAN/AM box which has just the relays needed~
