Any one know how long the a series auto bell housing is? i.e. the measurement between engine and auto box? I'm starting to think about how to fit my w5x Toyota gearbox to my a15.

Cheers, I just did some rough measurements on the two boxes in the shed, the standard 4 speed has the input shaft protrude ~16mm from the bell housing. The W5x box has the input shaft shorter than the bell housing by ~3mm and the bell housing it's self is ~ 161mm long.

If/ when I get to it I can take the bell housing to work and measure it on the flat table with a height gauge. Concentricity is more critical though.

Alloy case, w55-58, I'm not sure, bought it years ago. Alloy plate so an earlier one, counting ratios is apparently the only way to tell. I haven't done that yet.

I can post a pic if there's any Toyota buffs.

Ideally the auto bell would be less than about 135mm that would leave enough room for an adaptor without any other additional parts, otherwise I may as well use what I have. Either a cut and shut or adaptor plate and an extra piece to move the spigot bearing.

You're not wrong, it's hard to imagine an A15 ever breaking it regardless of how much extra air you pump into it! Should be bullet proof. Be interesting fitting it in the tunnel though. I might be after a bigger one.
