Why do you want to do this?
Is your current A12 head cracked?
If its for more power, just go to a whole new engine.

Its not hard at all, Get yourself a service manual for a start..... Its simple and straight forward, helpful hint is to tag / bag nuts and wires etc so that you dont have to remember where all the bits go....

Special note should be taken in regards to the long head bolt, as this bolt forms part of the oil gallery that feeads oil to the head. Observe where this bolt comes from. They are either of the middle bolts ( #5 & #6 ) Ive had various A-Series engines where the long bolt goes in #5 and others that go in #6.

If you already have an oval port head, then there is no real point in changing it. The larger port head will significantly improve the breathing of the A12. Its quite a cheap mod.

Ideally i would change the engine for and A14 / A15 as they produce more torque.

If your ute is a late model one the change over will be easier. (no mucking around engine mounts or rewiring as the alternator is on the other side). even though the mods are straight forward.

If you ask me, and you are on a budget and go to uni i would swap the head over for the oval port one on the A12 bottom end. Then aquire an A14 / A15, strip it down and rebuild with all the hot bits and peices over time when the budget allows.

Cheers, just my 2 cennts worth.
