#13 Re: A-series FS5W63A for L-series engine

Denuto advised that the L and A series input shaft is interchangable to solve that problem. Do you not agree?

Cant use a series box to l

Input shaft is machined to fit into a14 crank

Well DD I am trying to sell this 63a I have. No one seems interested. There is a 510 owner looking for a 5 speed which is where I was going with all this. Maybe he can benefit from the gearbox. Don't know if there is an advantage of using a 63 over 71. Probably not. Yes 71 is easier to find here in the US so he may just go that route unless he needs a dogleg 5-speed which will require this modification...

No. Any case from any 63A gearbox will interchange
* 63A for A-series
* 63A for L-series
* 63A for Z-series
The 63A is a 5-speed gearbox. There is also a 63 (without the A) which is a 4-speed and the case is very visibly different and so will not interchange

Why not use the common L-series 5-speed gearboxe the 71B or 71C series -- see 71

Ok this is the information I was needing. Individual with L series has 510 with L16/4 speed. Not sure what transmission it has and if the casing is interchangeble. So only 63a L series 5-speed dogleg casing is interchangeable?

I have had interest from Australia in the past to purchase this gearbox, but shipping is cost prohibitive. But shipping casing and input shaft my be within reason. Surprised that input shafts are interchangeble. If this transaction does not occur, What could I expect for selling these 2 parts alone?

Yes, unbolt the case off the 63A-for-A-series and bolt on the case from 63A-for-L-series

you might also need to machine the input shaft to fit into the crank (not sure)

63A gearboxes for an L Series engine are NOT UNCOMMON in Australia, but 63A gearboxes for an A Series are NOT AT ALL COMMON in Australia. If you have an A Series box, you need an L Series front casing and the L Series input shaft. If you can't get the L Series parts in the US, I'm sure someone in Ausrtalia will swap you the parts for your A Series front casing and input shaft. I do recollect that some models of the later series 510 sedan might have been fitted with a 63A box in the US. I'm sure someone will know. The 63A (dogleg) transmission was fitted to both 180B coupes and also Stanza SSS models in Australia, both with L Series engines and they are (reasonably) available here. I don't know of any Datsun model sold in Australia that had an A Series engine and a 63A gearbox.

And is there a "case" from another transmission that will fit and line up with all the bolts to the sandwich plate/gear of this A series 63a to make this conversion?

Ok meant to say the "case". So that is the only difference between L and A series 63a transmissions? The yoke from the driveshaft that slides into the the rear of the transmission is the same as well?

They are both 63A gearboxes, which does not use a bellhousing. Instead the case bolts directly to the engine. If you unbolt the case, the gears are uncovered

The gearbox case for L-series differs from the case for A-series. Otherwise they are the same. There is also a 63A case for the Z-series engine (Z20 engine from 1979-1980 Datsun 510)

Most Datsan RWD gearboxes look like this:
* Front case
* sandwich plate w/gear
* Rear case extension (extension housing)
