that got me looking up what beams is
wiki:Yotoda S engine a 2.0 liter DOHC iron block, BEAMS version has variable valve timing (VVT-i) and head by Yamaha * 1997 Red Top 200PS (manual) or 190PS (auto) * 1997 Gray Top 180 to 190PS * 1998 Black Top 210PS (manual) 200PS (auto) with dual VVT-i as you say, an SR20 competitor, like the SR20VE (but unlike the SR20VE which was FWD only, BEAMS came in some RWD) ![]() this ute must have the Gray Top version which comes from JDM RAV4 and Caldina Active Sports GT awd Since one of thes came in the Altezza (a version of the Lexus IS) im guessing thats where a RWD 6-speed comes from Altezza Beams

Hmm... Looks very clean!
Still deciding if I go 4AGE 16v or 20v. BEAMS is going to be way too much work. But an awesome engine. Thank goodness Cressida gearboxes are easy to come by this side of the planet.

way superior engine to the SR20DE and more reliable than the VE that toy engine
is available everywhere here as us army fellas are fans of the early lexus I even calculated using an SR20 bottom end with 210hp beams head when I was in Oz as I could buy an sr20 bottom end for 25 clams and import the Beams head and pistons sort it all out for cheaper than buying the converting the sr20ve to rwd and possible rebuild, hard to source valve mechanism spares if something went pop etc etc. The Beams head from the 6 speed had titanium inlet valves and simpler lobe on buckets than the complicated and rare Honda like finger followers only found on the VE. The gen 5 Beams in the lexus engine bay also looks cleaner with the pollution gear than the Nissans with the VE engines. I still hear the sound of the Beams been caned on weekends and around the us bases from time to time an incredible sound from the stainless headers they came with. Dam I want a Beams now in my fd3s rx7 as Im never going to rebuild it with Mazda parts or any parts unless Mad Mike does donations. Actually Beams 3SGE at full song sound close to 190hp BRE L16 and 198hp BRE L18 from this vid

wow what a great video - Indy Car driver pushes a BRE Datsun round the track. His commentary is the best thing
If the BEAMS sounds like that Datsun, it is a good thing By the way, Lexus here in USA never sold the BEAMS version, only the six-cylinder versions

wow, watched the video again from the beginning. He says he's never driven a car with such a sound. The Datsun gearbox is very good, handling/balance great, although brakes not up to modern standards and steering not so responsive. Unheard of at that time for a challenger to beat Porsche!

Yeah , great video. That sound brought back some sweet memories from the mid 80,s.
My 1st Datto was a rally built 1600 with a competitive L18 bore / 1910cc with 240k struts diff n box. And yes , his comments are spot on .

Sure is good to see a young guy be so astute and spot on about the rawness of the simple datsun
I love how bits and pieces were used from the 240z 240k were used. The 3sg, 1uzfe and jz sound very similar to each other as well in race tunes as the heads are all similar in architecture all Yamaha designs I suppose. Im still keen to do a SR20SGE aka SR20 bottom with 3sge top but no datsun atm and getting next to impossible here with prices going Lunar. You can view topic.
