Hey guys, after a frustrating day trying 3 different alternators that were meant to be direct replacements, I'm looking for anyone with a working (as long as the bearings are ok and it was charging the last time you used it, I can replace brushes) hitachi alternator.
Willing to travel to melbourne outer suburbs and beyond if need be. PM or reply here.

Failing that anyone have a part number for a new replacement that actually fits and is sourceable here in melbourne? The ones I tried either placed the pulley 5-10mm forward of the correct position, or were larger diameter and fouled the radiator hose/outlet pipe coming out of the block.

Datsun 1200 used different Hitachi alternators over the years. Starting with the LT-135 small diameter unit. circa 1974 started using the larger diameter LT-150. In 1981 started using the built-in regulator LR-135

Identification: LT135 has a black plastic grille on the back

The larger ones (LT150) have no black things on the back. Just the metal case

it's the lt135 that I have and am after.

Today a family friend did more running around. Apparently there are rebuild kits available and it has been ordered in. Not sure exactly whats in it, but bearings were ordered too (haven't seen him in person to know whether or not that's part of the kit or an option or what)

The place he went to had an old guy working there who used to rebuild them years ago and was familiar with the specific alternator. He said beyond brush wear, he encountered the rectifier failing in many of them with enough time/mileage. They are also apparently available, so we've tried to order that as well. Fingers crossed.

In the mean time I'm still after another, if for no other reason than to have the car on the road whilst I fix the existing one, which is difficult due to work hours. So anyone in melbourne/VIC let me know.

Thanks for the info too ddgonzal!

I just did a search on ebay, using the specific hitachi part number rather than generic datsun 1200 1973 alternator.

A few came up, but after the LT135 they had a "-" and either "13B" "69B" or some other numbers. Do these reference anything as far as the mounting lugs or dimensions (they all appear identical in the pics) or does that just denote what application it was originally placed on or something else?

Ive always ran away from electrics but just in case
I was able to use internally regulated ones found on
so many other later cars from all makes jp and korean
with a few instructions found online.

I cut the factory cast iron bracket with a hand file
saw to make sure the new one lined up and used the V
pulleys available on similar models from older cars.
On another I cut the bracket and used a washer.

Older cars getting hard to find but never had an issue
as I collected plenty of them from pick a part at $10
special week offers.

Cleaned up my engine bay as well as gave me extra amps
from I think was 25A on my 1k and 30a in another but
went to 35A and then 45A units.

$10 a pop was always good fun

The dash number is the version, often it has no discernable changes. B110 originally came with LT-135-13. Some of the later versions may have different ears for use on a Mazda or Isuzu or somesuch

The exact interchange is as follows (USA models, probably same/similar in other countries). Basically if it's a Datsun 35A, it'll work. In USA most Datsuns used 50A units which are physically bigger
* B110 1970-1973
* B120 1971-1985
* B210 1974 standard duty
* 510 1968-early 1971
* 521 1969-early 1971
* 620 1973-1979

The best one to use is the LR135 from 1979-1989, it is exactly the same size and has internal regulator. Just unplug the existing regulator and jumper two wires. See LR135 for more details

Yep my external regulator sat in the bay for a while till I trusted
the modifications over the years then eventually removed it and shortened
the wires that were connected to rid the external reg.

Japan maybe improved the quality of their later internally regulated alts
on fwd engines maybe from the extra heat and improved know how as japanese
economy improved and exports increased out of Japan.

My Mazda 70s alternators died from living over 7000rpm but when replaced
with later 80s units one I know has had engine rebuilt halve a dozen times
but alternator is the 90s version upgrade I had done which the auto elec
just charged me a 4L Cask of Lambrusco. It was just a wire with connectors
that joined 2 pins and to check the charging voltage etc.
For me at the time it was like he knew how to do magic :)

Thanks for all this help my friends.

ddgonzal I followed the link to the LR 135 in the tech wiki. The link to the part at baxters (aus supplier) didn't work, but I manually searched their presumably remodelled website and found the valid link and have updated the wiki accordingly)

The rectifier I ordered in doesn't even match the one in my old alternator, so I can't (at this time) rebuild it even if I wanted to (I will try and chase up if the right rectifier is available for research purposes! now that I have the old one to compare it to (was buying 'blind' because I hadn't had time to dismantle fully)

Based on all this my new plan of attack is sourcing (or getting a friend to - work hours are insane) a new one for a nissan pulsar n10 with e13 motor and fitting and changing wiring to suit.

I seriously owe you guys lunch if you're ever in melbourne (actually on that front D - what part of the universe are you living in now - once long ago you literally lived one suburb across from my place, the last I seem to recall you moved to Japan?)

John hope you get that lil beast going again, was good to see you cruising in the area long ago as you and I were some of the only guys driving analog machinery as dailys. We where like 5 minute drives from each other then, seems like a different life for me now I am in another world. Still love Terra Australis but we saw the writing on the wall as it is a corporate commonwealth registered under the SEC in washing DC running the show

if you ever come to Japan let me know and I will steer you away from toxic tokyo were most drones end up as a have to.
