I'm not trying to piss anyone off....and you're the first lame ass that says the TR6 is ugly, and to think you first called it a Mitsubishi Mirage. First off, you need to learn some freaking manners, and second off i just happened to come upon this website after wondering if anyone still drove that 30 year old car. It has to be an Australian thing since no one in this country has a 1200. Hmmm now if i wanted to be rude, I'd say you Australians are getting all of America's worn out junk. But i wont say that Just one other point...if i thought i was wasting my "gay ass time" on this, I wouldn't be doing it. One point i will make is that the Triumph members are much more polite.

TR6's are great collector cars which are worth at least 2x their original value or more. Owners try their best to keep everything original on them because that increases their value as collectibles. You guys talk about cannibalizing 1200's, bastardizing them with custom this and that....What kind of club does that? You should be developing a parts network, and promoting maintaining them as original if you ever want them to be worth anything....which i doubt they will be. Gee, another person from Australia..what the hell is with Australians and Datsun 1200's? Ask anyone here what a Datsun 1200 is and they'll not have a clue unless they're over 40 years old.

Well, not the best way to introduce your self to the club... but here goes my history.
My father bought a new 1200 back in 72 too, it stayed in the family for 18 years, 200000km, without any major problems. And got the bug there.

The 1200 gained a reputation for excelent reliability, and you can enter any garage here in portugal, speak about it, after a smile from mechanic he will tell you that he had one or knew some one who had, and it was one of the best one he ever owned, you go to the classics meetings, talk to the guys the now drive 911 and alfas, "Oh! a 1200, great memories, I started rally with one of those, nice litle car, my had twin SU, LSD, you can do that and that". We are not alone!
Back in the 70's they were raced, and we had a all datsun 1200 cup, they where light, cheap and easy to mod, and bullet prof.

When I was out to buy my first car (1994), the 1200 where cheap and that was my first car, now I will start sounding like the guys above... what great memories. It has few hp, but on a dirty or wet road you shure will have big smile on your face, as you slide it from corner to corner, you can start with 1200cc 69hp, some mods, 80hp then change to 1400cc 100, new webers 120, wild cam 140, CA18DET 300, 400...

1998 my brother and I formed a club in yahoo it took off slowly but it grow up to this... you have to agree that it's full of life.

Last year here in Portugal, we had a 1200 cup again, and many of the guys I talked about above came are driving in it, just for the fun of it... they race with an almost stock 1200. Again, we are not alone

I agree. Hostility is the last thing we need on online forums. You said that you didn't like them, you justified why you didn't like them. That's fair enough. I think you then saw this site, and wondered what the hell are these crazy people on about..

Anyway Steven, thanks for your experiences, any 1200 stories are good ones.

As for the export thing, no, none of the US 1200s made it down here. We got them from the motherland, especially for us. Parts books will tell you that Australian 1200s have tougher glass than was shipped to the rest of the world.

It's funny you say how unreliable your 1200 was. I reckon 1200s are the most reliable, unkillable car made in the past 30 years. And even 30 years later, they are still tough and unbreakable.

I have 3 of them..I'd like to have one of each model. But I particularly attached to my 4 door sedans. All of the USA ones have died because they've either been shipped to Mexico or Porta Rico, or have died due to salt induced rust from Northern states horrible winters.

I have 2 with absolutely no rust and in great condition. You are right about them not having any power out of the box. But like someone else has just said. We are car enthusiasts and we all respect the need for a tough A15 (1500cc) engine or some of us, like me, are going for the CA18DET or even Rotaries (no comment).

The 1200 (B110), like the 120Y (B210), are a part of my generation's history.
I think everybody knows somebody who's owned one. It is a "working class" relic, as opposed to an the old sports cars, that were out of reach when we were growing up, and simply aren't a representation of of what I'm about.

Hopefully that goes someway to explaining what it's all about.

Chris.

Worth anything?? My datto 1200 and 1600 are both worth way more to me than "market value" will ever indicate. They are the product of years of hard work by me.

Plus either will be twice as fun as your poofy triumph to drive!

thanks for a human response Chris...I am beginning to understand that the 1200 allows you guys to afford major restorations and upgrading...and perhaps you're right about shipping them to Mexico...although the Mexicans are all in LA. Here's why I bought a 72 1200 sedan...they were cheap!....$1895 for a brand new car. I put at least three 8 track players in my car, seeing as I was too cheap to buy a radio. They certainly were a working class car. Mine wasn't really unreliable, it just pissed me off on a few occasions, and those are the ones i remember. More power to you, if you can resurrect the Datsun 1200 from the past. I always liked the Datsun roadsters..now they had class.

LOL..now this is funny...When i got a 1200 I wouldn't dare to tell a TR6 driver that my 1200 was more fun...LOL....Is this the same world or what?

hats off to you danielblues....any effort to save the 1200 from the crusher is ok with me. But really, the seats sucked, and they were so buzzy and fussy on the road. Good on gas mileage though.
