All i can say is for a 30 year old car, look at how many young people are driving datsun's now. Its the fun factor that lures me in to datsun's.
The Triumph TR6 is a grandpa's car and people I know around my age would be embarrassed to be caught in one.
Man I'd love to see the look on your face if you brought your car down here and every couple of minutes were blown off the side of the road by a tough A15 1200 or 13BT 1600. Cause it WOULD happen

Let's see..if i remember right the Datsun dealership was kind of sucky, and they charged too much too....but the mere fact that you think my posts are childish is fine..at least you're reading them, and if you want to be a poor consumer, well thats fine too. You guys must never be driving these things, or you drive at night without your headlights on, cause I haven't seen a 1200 for many years, and I make many trips to and through Seattle. By the way, its one hell of a lot bigger than Salem, Oregon.

I suggest we leave this guy alone, let him spend his money and get him to post real results. By the way the 1200 GX was a purpose built race car from the factory and won its class at Bathurst.

Hello Steven,

First off, i find your relentless posts childish. You say that there are no more 1200s in the u.s. but isn't it funny that i am only 22 and have 4 of them. gee, how can that be? as you can see i also live in the pacific northwest. i have never had the problem of my windows not defrosting, and my cars have never over heated. you complain and complain, and frankly you continue to bark up the wrong tree. we like these cars, because they serve a purpose to us. some like to make drag cars out of them, due to their shear lightness. some road race them, some put bigger motors, different transmissions, brakes, and change the oh so terrible seats you can't stop complaining about.
still, others do restore them. that this car offers itself so easily to any of the above situations is a testament to it's coolness to us. this is what makes them so valuable to US. there are many types of car people out there. you are not one of us. that's not our problem. we have fun in our cars every day. so go and do the same in yours if you can. isn't that what this is all about anyway. you said yourself that your 1200 was with you for around a decade.
no one owns a car that long and hates it.

one final note, you talk about how valuable your car is and that you can sell it for twice what it went for when new. pin a rose on your nose. try selling that same car to any of us. my car is definitely worth $4,000; however i wouldn't sell it at any price because there is nothing else that gives me what MY 1200 gives me.

if you are smart enough to find it, take a look in the photo album under my username if you want to see my baby. if not, go back to wherever you came from.

well I'm not convinced. You guys are talking about a car that was Japan's answer to fuel economy. They were never intended for racing. I remember the commercials in the US, which called them the "rain" car, probably to suck in some environmentalists of that time. They stand as they were intended...cheap, economical transportation, with dubious reliability. The TR6 was intended for hard use, and top down enjoyment. It's the picture of what a sports car should be. By the way...don't laugh too hard..but i've not had any problem with Lucas electrics despite their poor press. Collectibility is based on desirability, not durability. I can sell my TR for 2x what i paid for it. They appreciate in value. You're driving a car that will never do that. Sorry, I'm still not convinced.

As my log in name suggests that I have been converted....
I have raced Formula Ford and they are quick little cars designed only for one thing that is racing. Now these things can cost up 100k in Australia and you would need a budget of 200k to compete in the national series. But with the 1200 you can have just as fast lap times with a car that cost 10k and a budget of 10k per year go figure!!!! Ive have just bought a 1200 sedan from John Boston who has raced and or driven anything from V8 Supercar though his connections through Ian and Warren Luff, Formula Ford Zetec's, Porsche GT3 etc etc and he said to me that he has not driven anything more formidable around Oran Park than Andrew Denis' 1200 CA18DET 1200 coupe. He said it was sideways all the way from the left hander coming onto the straight all the way to the pit entrance. Andrew then told him the engine was down 60hp on the day due to water injection not working!!! I have gotten into the real world of 1200 coupes. All we need to do is state the facts and move on from these discussions. We need to prove to the rest of the world these machines kick serious ass. Watch out for John Taylors EVO V 1200 coupe Motec A15. It should do close to 40secs flat at Oran Sth circuit which is V8 Supercar time!!! All I could see beating these thigs would be a Formula 3000 or greater...and spend $1m on the car. You can go spend the money we dont mind just leave us alone to beat you where it counts.....on the track. Thanks to Teretonga for your patience until I eventually came around.

Ok Steve I will spare you the flaming as you do have a valid question; The cars did run hot , over 4500 RPM sustained use. A three core radiator will fix this. They are boomy inside no doubt. Yes the valve seals and guides go at 40k but so what the car still runs.
Seeing as they weigh 1500lbs they handle quite well. I used one to win H-stock at local Autocross and turned faster times than I did with my friends Sprite.
I can build a race motor for less than $1000 try rebuilding any motor for that. A basic rebuild on say a TR-3 would run $1200. I did my 1200 motor in 1989 , the thing sings to 7800 RPM's it is still in the car.My buddie is a Triumph vintage racer and he digs my old 1200 , he wishes his car were that reliable.
These cars have as much race history as your TR6. 1200's have racked up C-sedan , GT-5 National Championships at the SCCA Run-Offs. Also at the SOLO II National Championships H-stock , H-stock ladies and D-street prepared have been won in 1200's. Also look at GT-5 entry lists over the last 20yrs the two most popular cars are 1200s and Minis.
So to sum up; They are fun to drive , will take a pounding and are dirt cheap to own , in other wiords they are lovable muts.
We would probaly ask why you would own a TR6 - the buy in cost is high , it has Lucas electrics , doesn't like the desert heat and parts prices are twice the cost of Datsun stuff. In fact I sold an extremely fast D-Sports Racer because I had more fun Racing the 1200
Tom Grossmann
PS Steve if you ever in Vegas we can make arranements for you to drive mine at a local Autocross , they are a much better car than you remember.
