Premium Unleaded.
Confused about Lead ??

Fuel

I guess it gets a little confusing as we americans can't figure out what aussies mean by "premium unleaded". In the USA premium simply means high-octane. All street fuel here since late 1980s is unleaded (no tetraethyl lead) but with lead-replacement additives of some kind.

Im always interested to hgere about fuels.. I did a spool on fuels with my mechanics course and I learnt that unleaded fuel is about 95-96 octance. Unleaded is about 92-94. Premium Unleaded is 96 octane. Vortex is also 96 but it is designed to clean out your injectors and fuel lines etc. Shell Optimax is 98 octane. The best fuel from my experiments is BP Ultima. I use BP ultima in all the old cars that run on LRP or Leaded fuel because the octane is better. I discovered the main reason you cant use unleaded in a leaded car is because the octance rating on unleaded is #### house. I found that a mixture of shell optimax and BP ultima was the best for performance (on any car) but as for fuel economy and performance the BP was the best all round. I found myself getting at LEAST 50kms more from BP then Shell.. running 98 premium. (in an AE86 sprinter with 4A-C motor). If I am running an old car on BP ultima all I do is up the advance on the ignition timming 3 or 4 degrees and you really notice a difference in fuel eco and performance.

I hope I helped.

I personally use the BP Ultima fuel in the track car......it just loves it. I used to run BP-100 before, when you were able to buy it in 20ltr drums at you local service station.

laws have changed so you cant buy it easily anymore.

good info AZA510........

Shell Optimax is the benchmark as i am told and i am no expert although if we are talking racing i dont think that you can past Drum fuel from specialist fuel suppliers

Optimax is not as good as it use to be.

AZA510 is correct.

Be careful alot of people think Vortex is 98 when it is only 96.

You can still use avgas Marty but alot of people are starting to get good HP out of 98.

Is there a difference between BP Ultima and BP premium? Older BP servos don't brand it as Ultima and I've stopped using it as an NRMA guy claimed it contained ethanol. Anyone know - I'm back to Vortex.

Vortex is like BP premium 96 octane.
Only BP that has the label 'Ultima' is 98 octane.

Theres only a handful of servos in sydney Metro i know of that sell Ultima............It pays to check first before filling up.

As for the ethanol in BP fuel........Would BP risk being caught using high Ethanol content in their fuel???

I'm sure BP wouldn't take the risk of declaring their fuels are ethanol-free and then adding it. All BP says though is that their fuels are 'guaranteed'. Caltex and Mobil state that their fuels are ethanol -free in writing. I haven't yet seen this at a BP servo but then I only go to a handful. Anyone seen otherwise?
