New 1200 Owner - Needs Advice

Recently purchased a '72 1200 with 44,000 miles on it.

One owner - origional invoice and owners manual.

Inside is clean - front driver seat has some wear and vents (by windshield) in dash are in bad shape.

Outside is about a 5 on a scale of 10 - paint is faded - both front fenders need work - some dings all over.

Engine runs fine - puffs some some when starting.

My questions:

1 - How much is TOO much to put into this car?

2 - Where can I get parts (fenders, dash board vent covers, etc.)?

3 - My son wants to ad a radio/cd player and speakers ------ it has none. Most new radios do not fit properly into the opening - where can I get a mounting/cover plate for that area ------ no audio shops seems to want to help.

4 - Wheels - again, my son wants some better wheels on it ---- any suggestions - thanks.

To be brutally honest, ANY money put into it will be too much in that you will never get it back. I shouldn't say never, but for all intents and purposes. Do it out of "love of the sport" and not as an investment.

Here on occasion. That looks like it was supposed to have a link in it. It doesn't. I was referring to this site we are on. (Thank you Daniel and Pedro Branco! You guys rule!)

A DIN mount radio will fit if the dash and support metal are trimmed. Does your car have the plastic panel above the vent controls that says "Datsun" or something like that? If so, the radio holes are behind that. You could mount a remote controlled radio, like the "Hidden Audio" systems for Hot Rods. Just a thought. Again, it's throwing good money after bad if you look at it honestly.

Here's where you are in luck! Any Datsun wheel, and most if not all Toyota wheels, will fit. Find a set from a later model car that you like, and voila! The bolt pattern, or PCD, is 4 on 4.5" or 4 on 114.3mm so they aren't hard to find.
Good luck, and have fun!

Is your 1200 a sedan (regular trunk) or a coupe (fastback)? Dimlight is right about how much $ to put into it. Only a handful in the US really care. I'd say spend the money for a good going over/tuneup. Enjoy it as a fun ride & classic transportation. And the fact that it will cost a fraction of a modern computer controlled ride. Your son & you can learn how to work on it - really easy- & maybe in the future upgrade the drivetrain. This site is where you need to be for endless amounts of info. Welcome!.............PS DONT CUT THAT DASH! One way to get $ out of it down the road is to not butcher it! Just my oppinion.

You can still by a good shaft-mount radio, but there aren't a lot of choices.

Don't spend a lot on the Datsun ... yet. Drive it around a while, make it good mechanically. Then you can decide how much to spend on it.

For wheels, the above yeah. Just make sure those wheels are Rwd (i.e bolt mounting face is near middle of wheel, not close to the outside like on a fwd car). Most 13" wheels (with aforementioned) 4.5" x 4 bolt center will fit just fine -- somewhere around 5" wide. Old 1960s Mustang and Corvair wheels (4-bolt) will fit as well.

Thanks for the positive replies.

The car is a two door coupe. We have had it for over a year and get looks and "offers" where ever we go with it.

Just nervous about the next progression with the car - fixing it up - etc.

I like the idea of a remote stereo - keeps the dash, etc in tact.

Keep the ideas and advice rolling in - thanks again.
