I personally wouldnt do a rotary conversion, if I wanted a rotor id but an RX2/3/4 but I can understand why people transplant them.

The reason people are so pedantic about putting toyota motors in them is there isnt any worthwhile coverting to. The only two notable motors around are the 4AGE and the 3 litre supra motor. Supra motor would never fit and would stuff up the balance of the car. 4AGE granted is a better designed motor than an A-series but it dont have a huge amount of potential. for all the hassle of swapping it might as well go CA or SR.

If someone is keeping an old Datsun alive and being alot faster than alot more expensive cars at the same time whats the hassle in that. 1200s arnt as common as they used to be but theres always gonna be enough around that stock ones wont be as prised as a bentley or anything

im not debating quickness, just responding to ddgonzal.

another argument against rotars is reliability and engine longevity, musnt be too bad if a rotary engined car won le mans in 1991 (mazda 787b)

Mikali, I'm not upset at anything you said.

Whats the point of having a car do a quarter in or faster than 15 seconds? That was in the response to the statement that the "A12 goes hard". It certainly does not accelerate hard compared to many other cars, hence my reply about acceleration times. I don't know if he meant "lasts a long time" or what, but my reply was very specific about how it "goes" in quarter mile acceleration. I could have just said "no it doesn't", but mentioning a specific measurable helps make a comparison.

Just a note, I'm not hypocritical about this. I think a Toyota powered 1200 is cool, and Mitsu powered one is cool. But so is a Nissan powered one. I myself prefer Nissan power, but can appreciate variety.

I would be curious to see what percentage of the club thinks rotary powered 1200s is "a bad idea". I think we'd all be surprised.

Mikali you need a smack , what is the point of being into car modding and street machining if youre not up for engine swap between manafacturers anyone here will agree that if you want an insane car you will go to insane lengths you don't see dattos in performance mags with a12's and an exhaust, you may se a 1200 with in injected l series but not the stock motor unless it's a DB dragster i say put what you want in if it goes hard great but thats the joy of modding, seeing a big block in a datto is cool seeing a rotary in a dat is cool seeing a rotary powered datsun doing 8.4 second passes is awesome and anyone who says otherwise is a nob, there i have had my say

My opinion on Rotary power is mixed. I think going a rotary, and planning to keep the car and engine running "forever" is quite a technical undertaking. I can respect that.
To make it work longterm, you need to know about 1200s and you need to know about rotaries. Most Rotary/Datsun owners are people who are looking for cheap power, and aren't into Datsuns for the "love of it". They plan to have the car for a year or two, and expect to kill it in the meantime. It's only about "cheap power". I think that's why these people are stereotyped as a bit undesirable.

Thinking about it more, I've got no problems with rotary tranplants. Just so long it's been done "with love" . I think it can be loud or quiet, so long as it's all quality.

I just can't see the logic in a hypothetical poll asking if its okay to rotary your 1200. First of all, I think that the majority would vote yea. But what does this prove? Simply that most guys who answer the poll support or prefer a rotary powered 1200. And who are these guys? Certainly not representative of the minority of us Datsun Geeks that frequent the forum. They are the silent majority of anonymous lurkers, and who knows or cares what they think anyway? Let's admit we have an eccentric way of thinking about these cars that others may find incomprehensible. Anyway, how serious can you take a poll that can be skewed by guys who wipe their cookies so they can vote more than once?

you think too much but youre right

jammy bastards

i think the phrase rhymes with clucking bell and ends with complaining "why put a non datsun motor in a datsun" *whiney voice*

Yeah to each his own, as long as you love your Datsun or Datsuns in general...you're cool in my book.

The way I am is strictly loyal to the car manufacturer for powerplants. I've seen lots of non-Nissan conversions in all different Datsuns, and they just don't excite me the same way, and I know why too. For me its because I love the underdog, the underestimated and unpopular types of things, I always want to be different in that way. I hate Chevies and I hate Hondas the most, because they're everywhere and people think if it isn't that, then it ain't cool. I first was loyal to Buick before I got into Datsuns, and they were so under-rated and trash talked cause they got the image of a grandmas car. But when given proper attention, they're far more superior to any of the other big block V-8's. The worst thing, the uttermost amount of blaspheme, was to find a non Buick engine in a nice Skylark or Gran Sport (A body) it makes me sick to my stomach.

That's how it started with me. When I saw a beautiful Datsun Roadster at the track, I got all excited, but when I saw it had a Toyota transplant and only ran 15's, I felt let down. However when he entered the burnout contest against a bunch of Hondas, you could guess who I was rooting for!

For those that are having problems understanding or dealing with a rotary swap in a 1200, just do like I do and take it with a grain of salt and imagine it beating the kind of car and guy you hate the most! For me that would be Ricers and ignorant rednecks who think their car owns the road. Just try to keep hold of the big picture.... it's still a Datsun....you never know what's under the hood until they show ya!
