Matt
cheap and decent.

bluebird struts
vl inserts and top mounts.
120Y lower control arms and steering arms
standard 1200 tie rods, draglink .
180b brake booster

I chose to put vl commodore brakes and calipers on the bluebird strut (vl hub fits with standard bearings?????wtf)anyhow they do trust me.You will need to make a mount for the calipers to fit. I needed to keep a commodore wheel stud pattern cause im using a VL borg warner diff. This is a great setup even better with a VT commodore brake upgrade kit to suit to VL. hence will also fit. All of this setup has been tried on my 1200 ute and works very. now cracking 12's so needed decent brakes.
If all that seems too much trouble standard bluebird brakes that come with the struts will do nicely, keep the datsun stud pattern and pull u up nicely.

Has anyone even bothered to look in the tech section before telling other people to???? Not much info under brake and suspension upgrades that I could find???

chill im just a newb trying to keep the people happy.

Sorry if my reply was a little too verbose. Here's another one...

I run a complex arrangement of brake parts. I don't have the specs on what is done, I'm not a shop, and I don't have plans to do the job a second time. This is the unfortunate thing about many of us who do the work ourselves. I start out wanting to document the job, but in the end, I have to ensure that it gets done and works safely, especially when weekend upgrade timelines must be met in order to get the car back on the road as the only form of transport. I suspect a lot of Datto upgrades are achieved under similar circumstances. So this is why many of us can only supply vague recollections of the parts needed. I don't have the money or the time to go and do it a second time, just so strangers can save a dollar at my expense.

My parts list is as follows.

2x DBA undrilled rotors to suit 96,97,98 model Verada (KL? KR?), if you have to get them drilled, then the non-ABS ones are better than the ABS ones (less holes).

I unfortunately cleaned up a little too quickly and threw away the hubs of the "large axle" 180B struts.
The 180B struts are identified by looking for 180B struts with a perfectly circular hub face. No scallops out of the circumference. I instead used what I think are R30 skyline hubs, I don't know for sure, because I had so many different "unlabelled" struts laying around at the time. These hubs needed a few mm machined off the back side to position the rotor in the middle of the caliper. These 180B struts have caliper brackets that suit the VLTurbo,VN,VP commodore front calipers. I use them.

As you would have read in the "previous posts" in addition to the tech section, the Stanza struts..and most other ones are too long for a 1200. The results in the car either sitting too high, or the suspension travel being limited. To resolve this, I cut about 50mm out of the strut tube to suit a 240Z sports insert.

As you would know, the 180B struts have large cups and springs, too big for a 1200, so I machined the cups from a larger diameter stanza strut, and rewelded them into place on the 1200 strut, using lowered/shortened sports springs to suit a stock 1200. I ensured the the springs were under 1/2 inch of preload when assembling the struts, to stop them rattling about while airborne.

The rear brakes are VL disc brakes. As fitted to the VL diff which I shortened.

I've spent about $2000 getting the brakes/diff/front and rear suspension right, and that's doing most of the work myself. So probably double that to get someone else to do it. I know I wouldn't do it for someone else, even at 4 times the price. It was a lot of hard work. ( If a gorgeous babe asked me..I'd consider it )

I hope this gives you an insight into why the details aren't always clear, and also give you an idea of what I'm running.

The conversion is documented somewhere on the web "Cam McKinnon's 1600 site?"

I'd rather say that I'm not sure on something, than be like the 60% of online forums "BS" artists, and tell you it's the best..and I had them fitted to my car before I bought my R34 GTR v-spec and married a supermodel..

Hope this helps.
Chris

I think I must have dealt with the guy who bought the V-SPEC R34 just before he married the super model.

As a result I still have over $3000 worth of stock that had to be purchased and fabricated.

Thats more like it, thanks Tappet and Dattodude,

Cost is not the issue, I want options!!!

Its not that cost isn't an issue, its just that cost shouldn't stop us from considering all the options.

Tappet can you tell us which model bluebird strut suits the commodore bits?

Thanks, Matt

i have had a lots of success with using R32 skyline rotors and calipers on Stanza struts.......works like a champ!!! In addition i also use a 180B small brake booster and a master cylinder from a 240k (7/8th from memory). on the rear i put rotor and calipers from a bluebird. Bias seems ok, but I want to install a adjustable brake bias valve (if i can chase up a volvo one, that 1200rC mentioned last week), i think it would be to the job.

All i want to experiment with now is trying different composition brake pads, to fine tune the whole setup.
The only drawback i guess, would be that i can only fir 15 inch rims or bigger.

Hi Benny,

Can you tell me, do the Skyline calipers bolt straight onto the Stanza struts or do you have to make new caliper brackets?

Cheers
