Thats a really good question...anyone setup an anti-sway system for the rear of a 1200??
Steve Brydie has a coupe in IPRA NSW with a complex system and the Datsun Performance suspension guide also demonstrates a setup. Just wondering if anyone's actually done it and has made a positive difference???

do you mean a rear sway bar,or something else entirely?you used to be able to get rear bars from pedders, particularly at penrith, they were about 16 mm.whiteline probably also makes them.in fact the 1200 coupe i used to race had a 22mm kmac front bar with the pedder rear bar.in fact i just found a rear bar for a 1200 while getting all the parts for the injection together.as for a rear bar from a wrecker, try for a ke70/ae71 corolla, some of them have a 10 mm bar.

I found that a stock 1200 front bar on the rear worked well in conjunction with a modified 120y bar on the front. The rear bar was mounted to the diff housing via fabricated steel posts that enabled standard 1200 brackets, bushes etc to be used. The eye holes at the ends of the bar were cut off, and a sliding collar arangment on rose jointed droppers provided infinite adjustment. I looked into the arrangement detailed in the Datsun modofication manual, but did not like the way that the bar clamped to the springs - felt that this would create another problem with spring rates etc.

Some years ago I used a Mk2 Escort sport rear bar that we put adjustable end mounts on so as to fine tune the handling. Even with a small bar like this 1/2'' each way was the difference between understeer, neutral and oversteer.
Something to consider though is that if you put on a rear bar you will end up lifting an inside rear wheel under hard cornering ( unless you've got an LSD ).Quite frankly you would be better to maybe throw another top leaf into the springs along with some heavier front coils- Hillman Avenger rears work very well.Sway bars really should only be used as a fine tuning devise - I'm sure this might invoke a bit of discussion!

Sorry, I meant to say lifting an inside rear and spinning it unless you've got an LSD

I use a Whiteline rear bar - 18mm I think, but I did some 'fine-tuning' with the angle grinder down to about 16mm on the arms. I run a locked diff and find it helps to get the inside wheel a little 'light'. It should not actually lift the inside rear if the front end is stiff enough, but it will unload that wheel and the end result will be the same - no traction exiting corners with an open centre.

There is no problem with the design in the Datsun Competition Suspension manual. The front half of the leaf is really nothing more than a locating arm, and the rear half does the actual spring work. That sway bar setup should help prevent the front of the leaf spring from deflecting which will locate the diff more consistently, and should also help prevent spring wind-up and axle tramp.

Two things to rember: To stiff a rear bar will have the inside rear wheel unloading and cuase excessive wheel spin on corner exits , even with the stock A12. Next and more importantly sway bars are meant to be installed as a set , if you slap a rear bar on with the stock front your car will oversteer wildly. This may work fine at an Autocross but anything over 50 MPH the car will be a handful. Also keep in mind that big sway bars will affect the suspension compliance.
My 1200 racer uses a 7/8 front and a 5/8 rear both are from Addco.
